I've lived in the Dayton area for more than 25 years and it always amazes me when I run into someone who has lived here their entire life and have never been to the DAI. The museum is a magnificent community asset which brings special exhibits to the midwest that rival those seen at major museums. The regional artists gallery allows the community to become familiar with the works of the artists living and working around them. The ExperienCenter has been a model for interactive children's programming at museums around the country. Students who attend art classes at the DAI or enroll in Summer Art Camp have an opportunity to interact with professional artists from within their own community and benefit from a child-centered program with foundations in the Reggio Emilia approach.

The museum was founded with the idea that it would be "Dayton's Living Room." That philosophy is the inspiration for such programs as "Fiction, Fine Art, and Fun" an art inspired book club that meets once a month, as well as jazz concerts and film festivals held on the museum's beautiful grounds and in their stunning theater.

General admission is free to the public and docent tours are available for those who would like to experience the museum with a trained guide. Special exhibits are reasonably priced and audio guides are usually available for those times when a docent is not on call. The museum is a great rainy day activity for moms with kids at home or a fun way to offer out-of-town visitors a visual treat.
