One of the biggest misconceptions the public had about World War II in general and specifically about the Allied efforts to defeat Nazi Germany is that there was a strategic blueprint that divided the liberation of Western Europe into several pre-planned phases, with one phase leading logically to the next, like a series of stepping stones across a pond or something along those lines.
