As soon as Bruce Wayne asks for a suit that allows him to turn his head, I knew this movie was on the right track. It's dark, psychological, complex, and the acting is phenomenal. But it is also eminently practical, gritty, and willing to delve into modern quandaries involving corruption of the police force, the mob, the nature of terrorism, and how deeply politics and publicity limits the good that public officials can do.
Here, finally, is the Joker done right. He's not out for profit, there's no reason given for his psychotic tendencies, he's just crazy, crafty, and evil.
I particularly enjoyed how thoroughly the movie explores the meaning of good and evil, of hero and anti-hero, of the edge between being a hero, a martyr, and an antihero.
For anyone looking for a great action flick - this isn't it. Not that it doesn't have the explosions and special effects, but it is also a long, twisted, plot- and character-driven story that doesn't end with an easy explanation for the nature of humanity and why we should all revere the Batman. All of us - rich and poor, businessmen and convicts, are painted with the same gray brush of ambiguity. The movie offers no answers, only questions. How crazy do you have to be, to be a hero? And how much further do you need to go before you become the antithesis of good?
