The Dark Knight —

I would just like to start by saying that I am nowhere close to being an expert on movies. I am, however, both hard to please and incapable of staying still, so I thought I would put in my two cents on this summer's most highly anticipated film.

I live in a small town in Maine, and our one "good theater" had sold out 4 screens for the midnight showing -- unheard of in a place where you could buy tickets day of for the release of Star Wars. Regardless, I was a little skeptical that this was more due to Heath Ledger's untimely death than to the movie itself, and I was definitely worried that I was not going to be able to last over two hours sitting in one place. Even greater disappointment hit when I realized that when you show up at 11:55 for an extremely hyped 11:59 showing, you generally end up sitting in the front 5 rows--further tests on my attention span.

The movie starts, and all of my fears melt away--two hours later and I haven't even noticed the time, nor gotten up to use the restroom, and I am upset that there is less than 30 minutes left. The Dark Knight found a way to wrap you in so tightly that you lose all sense of reality. You forget that the Joker is Heath Ledger, that Gotham City is really Chicago (my 2nd home), that the story isn't happening -- you become involved. Even if you take a step back and try to imagine Heath Ledger as the hunk from 10 Things I Hate About You or the plot as only a story-- you can't! It is nearly impossible.

The Dark Knight exceeded all of my expectations, as I'm sure it will exceed yours. There are few movies that I have ever recommended as strongly as this one. Not so great for the young or impressionable and mildly depressing at times, beware that this is quite literally the film that put Heath Ledger over the edge, but also know that should you decide to skip out on this film, you will definitely regret it. Personally, I am going to see it again. (next stop: IMAX!)

I was aware of all the hype and probably would have seen this movie because it was Heath Ledger's last, but after reading your review, I can't wait to go see it this weekend!
