The Dark Knight serves as the sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, where Director Christopher Nolan re-invented the Batman franchise.  Christian Bale returns as Batman, and though he is still new on the job, he has made quite an impact on cleaning up Gotham City.  It has however, annoyed the mob as well as many other criminals, and he is about to face a blow-back from just how well he has performed his job.  Now he is going to come face to face with a psychopath who wants to not only take down Batman, but burn everything down around in an effort to really destroy the man behind the mask.  Now Batman is going to be forced to adjust his methodology if he wants to survive, and he will toe the line of ethics if he wants to take down this mad man.

The mad man is of course The Joker, who goes a route we don't often get to see in comic book films, and that is of a dark and sinister direction.  Rather than a character that would adhere to the rules of former actors who played the Joker, this time around the psychopath is given so much room to breathe in the script, that you have no idea what is going to come next.  This violent temperament is what helps this character stand out, and it shows more of what was intended in the Dark Knight comics that what we have seen in prior roles by people like Jack Nicholson.  Brought in to be The Joker, is Heath Ledger, who puts in a simply superb performance that both frightens and intrigues the audience as the film progresses.  This is what an arch-villain is supposed to be like, and Batman has his work cut out for him.

The film isn't limited to just Batman vs. The Joker though, as that could be a little tiresome, and the film goes much further than just being one man against another.  Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) also plays an integral part in the story as the new District Attorney, who is sure that he can help put a dent in crime by doing things by the book.  Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) also returns as the clean-cut policeman, who seeks to help Batman any chance he can get, and together the three of them might be standing alone to bring down the mob and this single mad man that they have all turned to.  Also returning are Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Caine as Alfred, and Maggie Gyllenhaal as the replacement for Katie Holmes in the part of Rachel Dawes.  The cast is very impressive, and helps really propel this character driven film to entirely new locations in the comic book film genre.

The Dark Knight came along with a ton of publicity, in part because of the untimely death of Heath Ledger, and some might thing it was over-publicized before the final release to theaters.  That may be so, but The Dark Knight doesn't pull any punches, and it doesn't waste your time if you go see it.  It instead presents an impressive look into the mind of both a psychopath and a man that dresses in a mask to fight evil in Gotham City.  The film is packed with action as scene after scene raises the ante, and there are plenty of moments where the script is so impressive that you forget you are watching something that was based on a comic book.  Bale and Ledger are extremely good in their roles, and the characters are taken to a new place that will cement this film as one that really pushed the boundaries of the fight between good and evil.  Highly recommended and highly entertaining, this is one that should not be missed by any fans of the characters or actors.

Very nice write-up. I think Nolan does viewers a favor when he re-invents the Batman mythos in, as you say, such a way that "you forget that you are watching something that was based on a comic book." Maybe someday, if books are still around in 50 to 100 years, critics and readers alike will treat comics (or graphic novels) as part of literature rather than its little stepchild.
