The Da Vinci Code  — 

I'm well aware that this book sat on many bestseller lists for a long time.  I was working at a bookstore when The Da VInci Code debuted, and my coworkers and I read it just days after it was released.  And in the year following I talked many intelligent readers out of reading it (or at the very least warned them what they were falling into).  I love controversy.  It's great... it keeps the blood pumping.  But this book was full of poorly planned plot devices and bad grammar (which hopefully have been edited out since the first edition).  Dan Brown's idea of suspense is to change the subject right before climax, only to dawdle into another scene just long enough for the reader to lose interest in what was going on in the previous scene.  I thought it was terrible, mainstream fluff that didn't deserve all the attention it received.  There are better books out there, ones that are better written and just as controversial.  Don't waste your time on this one!

I have to say that I did enjoy this book. For me, it wasn't about the suspense, it was more a game I played with myself to see if I could figure out the clues before the characters did. The movie sucked though...

This book is poorly written but I did read it when it was the hot book. There are some very interesting ideas put forth, but it does get sort of bogged down by all the "twists and turns" of the plot. As we all know, bestseller status doesn't make it a good book. Its popularity really amazed me too.

Nice review - and totally true. I must admit, I did enjoy the book somewhat, but it's so far from being the best there is. I worked in a bookstore as well a few years back, and I never recommended this book. In a word, it's overrated.

I started this twice, but the problems you mention put me off. I may try again, but I don't know . . . it's not a fun book to read.
