The book's title, The Cake Doctor by Anne Byrn would lead you to believe that something is wrong with the cake and needs to be fixed. On the contrary. The author has taken basic cake mixes and improved them by "tweaking" them a bit.  The book begins with a chapter on Cake Mix 101: cake baking basics and the ingredients she has found to work best in the recipes.  After many chapters of cake recipes she even gives directions for making cookies, bars, biscotti and bread from cake mixes.  In addition there are many recipes for frostings, glazes and one compote.  I bought the deluxe edition that comes with 20 reader's recipes exclusive to to it. There are several versions of this book including paperback so it is easy to find.

After I bought my book I started trying one recipe after another.  I was baking so much I was giving the baked goods to neighbors and friends [one piece missing for taste testing of course!].  This started a neighborhood buzz that ended with a couple neighbors buying their own books.

With time the frenzy died down but what I gained [other than a few pounds] was the confidence to branch out and experiment myself.

This amazing little book will open up the creative gates of cake baking.

I don't need a recipe book, I need Betty Crocker! The first and last time I ever baked a cake it looked like a skateboard ramp. I'm not sure what happened but it sloped downward and further...uh oh, where is it? I did make apple something (not sure if you call it a cake) with those springfoam pans and that turned out good. I would love to be able to bake a Red Velvet Cake (the only kind I'll eat). Where is Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart when you need them? Hey, at this point I'll even "let" Rachel Ray come teach me ;+) ~Gigi

You missed your calling, Anna! You should be in marketing.

A great review! Now see -- if the marketing people had any sense they would display these books near the cake mixes at the supermarkets!

That is a great review. It makes me want to open the cupboards and start baking! I am honestly not a very good baker though. I have to rely on my Nana's Apple Cake mix that I sell through Tastefully SImple. That is my kind of baking - 2 eggs and 2 apples and your set! That is very sweet of you to bring cakes to your neighbors; mine won't even look me in the face!
