This book blows the movie out of the water. After reading this, I realize that the movie should never have been made. James Ellroy has a great ability to capture the flavor of Los Angeles in the 1940's. Or at least I imagine he does, as I wasn't born then. The book has a great emotional life to it. You really feel like you're witnessing a different time period. The only drawback with some of Ellroy's novels is that he can go in for a bit of shock value at the end. But it is still a very enjoyable ride. The characters are likeable and engaging.
