My Story
Several years ago, before my thyroid problem was discovered and treated, I gained 20 pounds seemingly out of the blue. I freaked...
review »I must admit, I am inspired by PattyTherre's and Jo's reviews of The Atkins Diet. Enough so that I wanted to write my review of this diet as well, just to round out the group.
I turned to The Atkins Diet several years ago in my late twenties, when I was looking to drop about ten pounds. To be completely honest, I am always looking to drop about ten pounds. Even when I was a child, and a small one at that, I felt fat. I turned to the Atkins Diet after low-fat diets seemed to become too restrictive, and also because my boyfriend's father had lost more than fifty pounds with the diet, and kept it off!...
review »Why did I decide to try this diet?
I had gained some weight and this diet appealed to me because it seemed I could eat a lot!
How healthy is the diet and does it pose any health risks?
Once when I was one it, I happened to have a doctor’s appointment. I told my doctor that I was on Atkins and he had no concerns about it. I was a bit surprised considering that one of the mainstays is unlimited fat- at least in the first phase. What surprised me so much is that my doctor’s specialty is cardiology and I have high cholesterol due to heredity.
One misconception about the Atkins program is that...
A few years ago I read the book and went on this diet. I stuck to it for two weeks and lost 15 pounds. I was amazed. The weight came flying off. For the first few days it was hard because I love carbs and they were such a central part of my diet. For the rest of the two weeks however, it became easier and I also added back a few things like strawberrys.
I tried a healthy version of this diet with included things like Turkey Bacon and Egg Whites for breakfast and salads for lunch. Cutting out the high calorie orange juice, no soda, and no chocolate (kill me now!) and then the...
review »7 years ago, I weighed 233 pounds. I didn't eat anymore than the average thin person, in fact, I ate a lot less. I was diagnosed by my doctor with metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovaries. I was pre-diabetic and on 2 blood pressure pills and my blood pressure was still high. My step-father was losing weight on the atkins diet and gave me the book to read. I read the book and was intrigued and hopeful. I went to my doctor to ask him about the diet and did my blood work. He gave me the ok to try the diet, but told me to modify it to leaner meats and do blood work again in a month. I was losing...

My husband was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 15 years ago. He struggled with several different diabetic diets and various medications and could not get his blood sugar leveled out. I have always been a "BIG" girl and I've tried numerous products and diets in my lifetime. Against the advice of his physician, we set out on a 12 month adventure.
It was so easy to do---at first. Just give up bread, buns, corn, peas, cake, cookies, bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit, pancakes, breading on fish, breading on tenderloins, breading on fried chicken.......the list goes on and on..... We both missed...
review »I am on Atkins again after a successful weight loss. This diet really works well for me. It makes my skin clear up, my dandruff disappear and my weight drops. I moderate what I eat, lots of green leafy veggies, a mix of proteins including chicken, fish and beef. I have strawberries, cheese and nuts. I have found that measuring helps a great deal. Even though there are not any restrictions on amounts eaten, I find that measuring helps me know exactly what I am eating.
This diet works so well for me that I have actully been told to go on it by my doctors. Each person is different, but the lo carb...
review »Atkins. It's very extreme in the diet that it poses. All meat, eggs, cheese all the time. Hardly any or no carbs. Sounds great for those couch potatoes, right? But is it a good system long term?
Any diet, be it Atkins or South Beach or any number of the others, should consider the moderation rule. You shouldn't cut anything out of your diet to extremes. Even Vegans (vegetarians who do not believe in eating dairy or egg products) still have to supplement their calcium and protein intake since their diets are so restrictive.
Health risks to consider:
High protein diet (such as the Atkins)...
review »This diet is a great plan it helps you to recognise what foods your body is intolorant to. To get through the first 2 weeks I focused on the fact that I would be able to reward myself with strawberries on the third week. I drank the Atkins shakes, ate well and hunger pangs disappared. It also helped me to research recipes and found that most of these foods were sutible for my son who is autistic- he is allergic to all the foods forbiden on the Atkins diet and then some. We now have more recipes to enjoy and I am able to eat glutten free pasta. Knowing what foods to void (processed foods,...

I am not sure what it was about this diet but it was the only thing I could stick to. I contribute it to the fact that I am an all or nothing kind of person and and not the type that can have just a little piece of cake or something. The fact that it was completely off limits worked for me and after not having it for a bit I didnt want it anymore. However, on diets like south beach, weight watchers, etc where you can have treats now and again I failed everytime. Just having one bite is the kiss of death because once ya start its hard to set limits.
What I liked most was that after a few...
review »I love the Atkins diet. My husband and I have been doing this for about five years off and on. I know how everyone hears of the horror stories but with any diet there are negative stories. We went on it and did everything it called for. The weight went off without any problems. the first two weeks is like a fasting to get off several pounds instantly. Each week we would weigh and lose one to two pounds each. This diet has been the best for me because I was eating my vegetables and cutting out my starches which I seem to thrive on but not good for the weight. I never had any trouble...
review »Atkins is a no brainer. It works. The problem is you have to be super into it to make it last. The best diet for a quick fix, then you can allways slowly get into watching what you eat. If you are careful, you can maintain your lost weight. It is SOOOO expensive to buy food though. I allways have a huge amount of energy when I do this and I lose weight in my stomach! Definitely a bonus. I know there are gonna be people that say oh no, Atkins is a lifestyle. Well it is a sad lifestyle if you love carbs!!
The Atkins Diet was very effective, but not worth all of the side effects. In my first 2 weeks on Atkins, I lost 13 pounds, and have kept it off, but I was a zombie-witch the entire time I was on the diet. I became very constipated, exhausted and extremely moody during this diet. The pounds came off, but I chose to stop for my sanity and the sanity of my family!
