I got the Tetra Whisper Heater at Walmart to use for my betta fish (they need heaters & large tanks don't let anyone tell you differently.) anyways, I plugged it into my 5.5 gallon tank for the recomented 24 hours before adding the fish. It heated the tank nicely, even without a filter the entire tank was close to the same temperature. This heater claims to keep your water at 78 degrees and it does, my water is usually between 76-78 degrees. I've had the product for a little more than 6 months and I love it. During water changes I unplug it for about 15 minutes then remove it and can bring the tank to the bathroom to clean it. Make sure you have a drip loop for the cord, this will help you avoid electrical shock or fire. I would also recommend keeping the heater horizontal about 3-4 inches from the bottom of the tank.
Overall the Tetra Whisper Heater is a great value and has worked perfectly for me.
