REI Quarter Dome UL Tent

My daughter and I took the REI quarter dome UL on a 4-day backpacking trip.  I loved the light weight, the ventilation, and the vestibules for our boots.    She found the interior a little too small . The excellent ventilation was important in the hot nights of a Georgia summer. We had no rain, but the interior stayed dry when tested with an arching spray from a garden… read full review »

First-UP 10' X 10' Gazebo Tent

First-UP 10' X 10' Gazebo Tent
Photographer's Assistant, An Event Vender

2008
My sister in law is an aspiring photographer.  So in order to promote her business, she attends a few events during the year.  During this time she acts as a studio doing mini-sessions on the spot.  One of the best times was the Boo at the Zoo event held here in town.  Instead of setting up shop in the open air, where anything could happen (especially here in Michigan), she invested in a First-Up Gazebo Tent to shelter at least from the sun and rain.  Just a few weeks ago I attended an event with her where we used this little gem and it is perfect for the vender on… read full review »

Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight Tent

Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight Tent
looking for durability, practical, a man, hiker, outdoorsman, loving this product

While my Clip Flashlight Tent from Sierra Designs is showing its age (I've had it for 13 years), it's still going strong and I heartily recommend it as a lightweight 2-person tent for three season camping. — Seriously, this is the tent that just keeps on ticking.  I've used it so many times I can't count and besides some leaky seams and a bit of fraying here and there, it's just as good as the day I got it.  As for the leaky seams, that's nothing that some seam sealer hasn't fixed. — The Tent — The best thing about this tent is the fact that it weighs just 4 pounds… read full review »

We bought this tent last summer to go camping, but ended up putting it in our backyard to use for a couple of days. This tent is great...a little complicated to put up at first. We are a family of seven with five kids so the perfect size for us. The tent has two rooms and a small closet with a light that can be put up either inside or outside. definitely recommend this tent if a big family or a couple friends go… read full review »

This is one of the cheapest lightweight 2-person backpacking tents out there. It's super easy to set up even for one person. There is plenty of room inside for 2 people but their gear would have to stay outside and the vestibule isn't as quite big enough to 2 people's gear (there wouldn't be enough room for 2 large men inside the tent). The first night I used it there was a storm and I had no leaks and very little condensation inside the tent. It was also about 45deg outside but it was pretty warm in the tent. My one complaint is that one of the walls is a single wall construction and so… read full review »

NEMO Equipment Inc. Hypno PQ Tent

I was looking for a lightweight tent with a small packed size to use for bicycle touring. I came across the Nemo Hypno PQ, and it fit the bill perfectly. I first used it for three separate short, two-day bike tours, then took it on a two-week tour in New Mexico. The small packed unit fits perfectly on the top platform of a front or rear bike cargo rack. The included stuff sack is waterproof, which is nice if you get caught in wet weather on the road or trail. Setup was a breeze using the included integrated pump, and it was easy enough that it didn't leave me gasping for breath, even after… read full review »

I actually bought this tent based on the price and the weight, not really expecting to be so impressed! Lightweight, (4 lbs) its an ideal backpacking tent...the only thing I would change, (and its no biggie) would be if the poles folded up just a little shorter, so it wouldn't stick out when lashed under my pack....But it didn't hinder me in any way... — It has a bathtub floor, and the rainfly covers it completely, VERY important in pouring rain. This awesome little tent has TWO doors and TWO vestibules; great for storing muddy gear you don't want in your sleeping quarters. Very… read full review »

Wow! What a well made tent. I can't say enough about this tent. It is very easy to put up. Because it is single wall, when you zip down the windows you really have an openness. It is not like crawling into a cave. It is extremely durable. Loaded with features. I love the storage bag that fits to the tent with cinch straps--no cramming into a undersized bag. Heavy duty canvas will keep you dry and comfortable. I really love this tent! Thank you Kodiak… read full review »

REI Base Camp 4 Tent

REI Base Camp 4 Tent
very happy with this product, quality conscious

The REI Base Camp 4 tent is the ultimate car camping tent.  We have used it for three years now under all kinds of conditions.  We have never had any leaks during heavy rain, nor have we been uncomfortable during hot summer nights as the tent is very well ventilated.   It served us well by retaining warmth when night temperatures were in the 20's while fall camping in Yellowstone. —   — The Base Camp 4 is a high quality free-standing four person tent, optimal for two or three people to have plenty of room. The dimensions are 60" in height and the floor… read full review »

Sierra Designs Electron

2007
After doing a bit of research and searching the internet for good deals, I stumbled upon the Sierra Designs Electron. I suppose as background, I consider myself to be a somewhat serious hiker and camper, but cannot afford to spend tons of money on gear. Given that, I am very happy with my choice in purchasing this tent. — — Highlights: — -It is easy to set up after a long day on trail — -Small and fairly lightweight without making on feel claustrophobic — -Handles water and condensation very well. — -If weather looks good and you aren't using the fly,… read full review »

REI Quarter Dome UL Tent

REI Quarter Dome UL Tent

The Quarter Dome packs up at around four pounds. That is crazy light in my book. And you don't have to sacrifice quality to get it. This tent is well made, and all the detail are handled well. Two of those details that I really like are the rain-fly and the zippers. The rain fly has color coded corners to help you get it on right with a minimum of hassle. (If you look at some of my tents, you'll see magic marker notations.) The rain-fly can also be rolled up some after installation, for the view, and adjust back down quickly if circumstances require. The zipper pulls have a reflective… read full review »

REI Hobitat Tent

REI Hobitat Tent

The REI Hobitat is a big, comfortable tent. It comes in a 100"x86" 4 person model and a 120"x100" 6 person model. I like it a lot, mainly because of two features. The first is the variably flexible poles. The bottom couple of feet of each pole is more rigid than the rest, leading to straighter sides. This means more head room closer to the sides, allowing normal size people (not me) to stand up. The other really nice feature is the large door. No crawling in and out. The width of the door also helps you avoid climbing other campers. I know larger doors are standard on family style tents… read full review »

When my backpacking tent finally gave up the ghost it was time for me to replace it with something substantial.  I wanted a light weight backpacking tent that I could use in any weather, here in New England we can get some pretty snowy weather even as late as late spring and early fall.  Weather can change pretty rapidly in our mountains so a good tent can make the difference between hearing the weather and being a part of it. —     There were many quality tents to choose from from many different manufacturers, price was one of my concerns and… read full review »

This was the first tent I ever bought, and the first dome tent I ever used. This is a very roomy two person tent. It's listed as a three person tent, but I'm 6'6" tall and weigh well over 200#.  When I go tent shopping I just look at the floor dimensions and decide with how many people I want to share it. I, personally, couldn't imagine two other people in there. — Setting up the tent is easy. It's also quick once you do it a couple of times. My girlfriend and I set it up in less than ten minutes in a 25mph wind. The places to stick the flexible poles in are 'flagged' with a red… read full review »
