Television's Greatest Characters —

Greatest Characters on TV
According to Me Anyway :)

Fraiser Crane - This character, played so very well by Kelsey Grammer, is so good that he was the only character in the classic sit-com Cheers to have his own sucessful spinoff show.  I loved watching him in both shows.  HIs own show, Fraiser, was under head writer Christopher Lloyd who is hilarious himself.  He's the classic shrink who's almost as crazy as his patients.  The chemistry among his costars on that show is just fun to watch too, especially with Niles who sometimes steals the scenes he's in with his contrastingly subdued but very funny acting.

Kramer - Of all the crazy characters on the most famous show about nothing, Seinfield, Kramer takes the cake.  I'm surprised Richards hasn't parlayed his Kramer into his own show.  He's the nutty neighbor every apartment dweller hopes he doesn't have.  A trainwreck waiting to happen, but we can't keep from watching to see what happens next.  My favorite was when he made the coffee table book that was it's own coffee table.  Brilliant!

Lurch - This character was so great, he could make you laugh without hardly saying or doing anything.  He was hilarious just being there and reacting to the lunacy around him.  Even people who haven't seen an episode of The Addams Family know his famous phrase "You rang..."  I forget who played him but he must have had the deepest voice ever in TV.

The Doctor - The Doctor is the most perfectly concieved and written character in TV history.  Proof of that is the fact that his show Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi series in history, beating out Star Trek, even with it's spin-off shows.  The Doctor has been wowing audiences ever since the 60's.  There was a brief lapse in the 1990's before the new series started up on BBC and Sci Fi Channel, but the show is back and better than ever.  The genius of the Doctor is that he's a humanoid alien called a Time Lord who can regenerate if he is killed.  When he regenerates, he takes on a different appearance and personality but he retains most of his memories.  This little trick makes it possible to replace the star of the show with a totally different actor whenever the producers need to without disrupting the flow of the Doctor Who universe.  Simply amazing thinking.  In Europe, where Doctor Who fandom continues to rival that of Star Trek's trekkies, the unveiling of a new Doctor is as big a deal as a new actor playing James Bond.  Every time the Doctor dies, there is endless speculation as to which actor will be chosen to replace him.  The Doctor is in himself a great character for more than that.  In all his incarnations, he's an amazing blend of goofyness, eccentricity, brilliance, intensity, compassion and sometimes even wrath.  He's the ultimate detective hero, figuring out what evil scheme is afoot and defeating his foes with his wit more often than with physical violence.  In fact, his favorite weapon is used most often as a tool.  The sonic screwdriver, one of the most clever props ever invented, can do just about anything.  It can reprogram robots, pick locks, neutralize deadly rays, detect traces of stuff and of course tighten or loosen screws among other things.  HIs sidekicks, known as "companions" add variety and sometimes eye candy to the show (when they are beautiful women).  My favorite is still and probably always will be his robotic dog K-9.  K-9 was so popular as he tagged along with the Fourth Doctor (Baker) that he even had his own spin-off cartoon K-9 and Company for a while.  K-9 is the R2D2 of Europe and is still as instantly recognizable to them as a certain trashcan shaped droid is to Americans.

Anyway, of all the TV characters I like, The Doctor is probably the very best.

Thanks for the info--I like some of those too. It will be interesting to see where TV and acting goes in the next 10 years with so much of the reality TV we have today.
