Buying 'green products' is very popular today. Many people want household cleaners that work, but do not harm the environment. The bad news is many of the new green products cost a lot. But the good news is that some old-time, natural products that are inexpensive and can help keep your home looking bright, clean, and healthy. Borax is one of those products.

Sold under the named 20 Mule Team Borax, this product is made of the naturally occurring mineral called boron. It is not harmful to water systems, and does not contain phosphates or chlorine. Although it's a granular powder, Borax quickly dissolves in water.

I use 20 Mule Team Borax to provide some extra boost to my laundry, mostly when washing stained dark clothes or the sheets and blankets my dog sleeps on. It helps increase the cleaning abilities of laundry detergent and also removed odors.

Besides use in laundry, Borax can be used as a deodorizer, to clean delicate items like china, to softer water for hand washing, and to remove bad smells from mattresses, baby clothes, and toilet bowls. Your great grandmother probably used this product, since it's been on the market since 1891!

I probably could use the product more often than I do, when you consider how versatile and effective it is. I also like the fact that it costs only a couple dollars for a 4.5-pound box and is readied for market without a heavy-duty manufacturing process. It's not made of a bunch of scary-sounding chemicals!

If you are wondering about the name 20 Mule Team, that comes from when this mineral was mined in the harsh desert of Death Valley, California in the 1800s. They used a team of 20 mules to pull giant wagons full of boron to the nearest railroad for transport. So if you are as stubborn as a mule about buying and using versatile products that do not harm the environment, I recommend picking up a box of 20 Mule Team Borax.

Good review...my mother gave me a book called "Green Clean," with recipes for all natural and homemade cleaning products, most of which call for borax. Thanks!

I'm glad you found products that work for your family. Perhaps you could do some research to see if Borax is useful for you in some other way. Thanks for stopping by.

I have heard so much about this but never used it. the girls have sensitive skin and I worry about moving from what works, but wish i could at least try this.

The Borax really helps remove those ''doggy odors'' from his bedding. I also used it to wash out the tub after his bath - lots of uses.

Good review! I'd forgotten all about Borax. When you mentioned washing dog sheets and blankets, I came to immediate attention. Of course it would be the perfect booster. Thanks for the reminder!

I like those old tins too. I vaguely remember my grandmother always having a tin of crackers on her kitchen counter. They then re-used them to store all kinds of things.

I love the box design! I collect the nostalgic tins and have them displayed in my master bath. Most of them are the old cleaning products like Ajax, Borax and so forth.

Isn't there some kind of cave garden made with this? I think I remember using it, and it would grow up or down or both in a jar maybe. Very long time ago. Anyway, I wil look for this again. Tks.
