Tattoo Artists —

My brother is an internationally known tattoo artist.  From him I have learned quite about about the tattoo world.  First and foremost, if you walk into a tattoo shop and it's not clean and hygenic looking (meaning no dirt around the corners or baseboards) then you should be a little leary about getting a tattoo there.  He tattoos in some pretty high class tattoo parlors and all the artists he works with are very concious of the cleanliness of their surroundings.  Pretty much all parlors use autoclaves to clean the equipment, but does the parlor you're about to get your tattoo in clean the chairs and their stations effectively?  Watch them tattoo someone else and notice the precautions they take to keep the work area clean too.  They are working with blood and bodily fluids at the stations (tattoos and piercings), so it is important for them to take precautions and clean up appropriately.  Take the time to watch your artist work before you get your tattoo.  Most parlors allow the artists to tattoo in sight of customers, so you should have no trouble watching long enough to see if the parlor is right for you or if you need to pick a new one.
