A reliable rechargeable Bluetooth mouse and easy on the budget

4

When I purchased one of my Gateway laptops I wanted a wireless mouse that didn't require a dongle sticking out of a USB port. My wife's laptop had already lost one of its USB ports when she caught it on a door frame. Since my laptop had a Bluetooth radio built in I figured Bluetooth was the way to go. I decided to go with a Bluetooth mouse sold by Gateway. In fact it is a re-badged **Targus AMB03US Rechargeable Bluetooth Wireless Mouse**. In place of the bright blue palm rest, Gateway features a more muted gray palm rest. The mouse is a simple 2 - button with scroll wheel model that allows the user to increase/decrease tracking sensitivity (800 DPI/1600 DPI) on the fly. One of the unique features of this 4.1"L x 2.1"W x 1.4"H mouse is that it's powered by a pair of rechargeable AAA NiMH batteries (included). The batteries are charged when needed by a mini-USB cable. The mouse remains fully functional while being recharged. The **Targus AMB03US Rechargeable Bluetooth Wireless Mouse** pairs easily with any Windows 98SE or later or Mac OSX machines and uses drivers that are already resident in these operating systems. Battery life between charges is advertised at 2 weeks although I found that the included 700mAh batteries were generally drained in a much shorter time. Replacing them with higher quality 1,000mAh batteries proved more satisfying. Performance Performance of a mouse can be measured in different ways. For the most part the **Targus AMB03US Rechargeable Bluetooth Wireless Mouse** behaves much as a typical wireless USB mouse. But, because Targus employs an aggressive power-saving sleep routine, the mouse after several seconds of inactivity requires a click or some movement to awaken. Though some reviewers report seconds before it awakes I find the lag almost imperceptible. Targus employs an extremely high powered invisible laser that allows the mouse to be used on any surface including glass. In fact, the cursor will track even if the mouse is held an inch or so above a solid surface. I do notice that if the cursor is allowed to hover over a button or link for any time it has a tendency to travel. That could be a response to minute movements of my fingers detected by the high powered laser. Whatever the reason it can be a little disconcerting. One of the strongest features of this Targus is its incredible range. The manufacturer claims it to be 10 meters. Although I've never tested it at that extreme, it reliably controls my PC from across our family room when the computer is tied into our HDTV. That's a nice feature. Durability The build quality of the **Targus AMB03US Rechargeable Bluetooth Wireless Mouse** is solid. We've been using this mouse on a number of our computers for over 3 years and it shows no signs of slowing down or wear. Its durability is one the reasons that this Targus mouse remains one of the manufacturer's most popular. Design The **Targus AMB03US Rechargeable Bluetooth Wireless Mouse** has a sleek comfortable design and can be used with either hand. Comfort The Targus Mouse has an ergonomically sound design. It's small enough to be a "travel mouse" but large enough to be your everyday workhorse mouse. If I could change one thing about its form I would make it just slightly taller.
