Targus TXL717 Rolling Expandable Computer Case —

Bottom-Line: ultimately this bag did not fit my needs; can you say Craig's list?

The Targus TXL717 Rolling Notebook Case is a versatile wheeled computer case that sports a total of four compartments: one main compartment for the laptop computer, another for books, plus two smaller compartments for computer and other accessories.

The first main compartment situated at the back of the bag holds book, file folders, magazines, etc.  The expandable compartment also holds two separate zippered mesh bags for the computer power supply and cord.  The compartment is large enough to accommodate two medium sized books, plus a writing pad or notebook.  The struts for the expandable handle protrude into this compartment, giving the bag a rather unprofessional air.

The second main compartment holds the laptop computer, and is large enough to accommodate a computer with up to a 17" screen.  The compartment has a divider that can be moved to fit your particular notebook.  The case lacks a separate laptop sleeve however, which is rather large setback.

Right in front of this compartment is another smaller zippered section for holding computer accessories, pens, pencils, a PDA, CD-ROM's, business card holder, removable key fob etc.

Finally, the TXL717 Rolling Notebook Case sports a small zippered pocket at the bottom of the front of the case in which I store cables, and my cordless mouse.

My Viewpoint

I have mixed feelings about the TXL717 Rolling Notebook Case.  It is large enough to accommodate my business laptop with ease, plus books, notepads, cell phone, etc.  When empty the bag is light and easy to carry, either via should strap or padded handle.  And I like the TXL717's versatility and its plethora of pockets and compartments.  The TXL717 rolls with ease on big hard rubber wheels.

For some reason, Targus choose to put the laptop compartment in the front main compartment as opposed to the rear.  This has resulting in the center of gravity being shifted to the front of the bag; not good.  When the notebook is placed in the bag, it will tilt forward if one plush enough carpeting despite the legs under the front of the bag.  This even happens when the rather heavy zv5000z power supply is loaded into the rear compartment.

Also, I do not like the shoulder strap.  While it is padded, it is also curved and made with a not so soft material that digs into my shoulder.  It's been a about a month a half since I first ordered the TXL717 Rolling Notebook Case, and I am already looking for a replacement bag, one that offers a little more flexibility and engineering; i.e. laptop compartment in the back of the bag.

Features:

Zip down workstation for business cards, media, pens, pencils and more

  • Fits most notebooks with 17" screens
  • In-line skate wheels and 3-stage telescoping handle
  • Comfortable ergonomic handle and padded detachable shoulder strap
  • Meets carry-on restrictions for most major airlines
  • Locking zipper pulls on the padded notebook compartment
