I own a 5 year old 15" Gateway laptop which started heating up these and thus hanging often. So i bought after seeing some good reviews about it in Amazon. You just need to plug in and you can comfortably operate when on lap. the fan is upwards, so the heat goes upwards not letting us feel the heat. the only problem was even though it seems to cool the laptop, one side adjacent to laptop fan is still a little hot. at times i adjust the laptop to this chill mat so that part is ventilated too. But overall it does it job and is noiseless. Worth the money. I have using this product now for over an year and there has been no hassles yet. Now my laptop doesn't hang up or shut down on its own due to overheat. Overall performance has improved. My grandparents loved it so much that we have gifted them for their HP Laptop and they just love it. I always connect my laptop (as its old) to current so haven't noticed any drain in battery.

This lightweight laptop pad is made by Targus. It features two cooling fans that are inside the pad and run using a USB cord. The fans are very quiet when running, so you most likely won't even realize they're plugged in - but this can be a bad thing because in order for the fans to stop running, you need to manually unplug the USB cord from your laptop. If you close your laptop so it goes into hibernate/sleep mode and you leave the USB cord plugged in, the fans will continue working. The chill pad itself is made of grey plastic and a black foam-like material. It is comfortable when working on your lap and is angled - however, you cannot adjust the angle of the pad itself, you'll need to tilt your laptop screen instead. It fits up to 17" laptops. There are four rubber nubs where the laptop sits to prevent the laptop from slipping off the chill mat. These four nubs work wonders - no matter what angle I'm sitting at, the laptop never slides off the mat. If you're looking for a fairly inexpensive chill mat, this seems to do the trick.

This fits laptops up to 17 inches.  It is black and grey, sleek looking.  Comes with dual fans and you just plug the USB connection in to your computer to work the fans.  I did not see a degradation of battery life using the mat.  The mat sits comfortably on the lap and is even angled which makes it easier to see the screen and work on the computer keyboard.  There are also small rubber stoppers on the side the computer goes on to keep the laptop from slipping off the mat.  I was struck by how quiet the fans are.  You can barely hear them working so there is no disruption to the speakers if you have music playing while you work.  The mat itself is not heavy.  I especially like that it offers protection from the heat of the laptop.  I have heard about people getting burns from keeping computers on their laps without any protection.  I am not sure if keeping the laptop cooler with fans really extends the life of the laptop but it can't hurt!
