My favorite lettuce, Tanimura & Antle's Living Lettuce, is hydroponically grown. The lettuce is grown on water [no soil] in specially designed greenhouses.  It is a "Butter" or Bibb lettuce that stays fresh longer because it is packaged in a clear plastic package with its roots still attached.

When you bring the lettuce home from the store, simply store it in its clam-shell container and take off the amount of lettuce [wash and dry] that you need leaving the roots intact.  Store the remaining lettuce in the shell. This guarantees fresher lettuce longer.
