TV Guide Review Summary

Television watchers may or may not find something useful in TV Guide, a magazine for those who like to keep up with the latest television news and programming. TV Guide ranks as one of the best- selling magazines in the United States and reviewers like its celebrity articles, timeliness, and low subscription price. “When I Want to Know What is on TV, This is the Place I Go”, says one of the satisfied reviewers. But there are plenty of criticisms unloaded at TV Guide, among them the magazine’s unreliable television program listings, its lack of any daytime listings, and its lack of descriptions of the different shows. TV Guide is “Not What it Used to Be” and one reviewer even recommends that potential customers “Save Money and Buy the Sunday Paper”. It adds up to a Magazine Publication with inconsistent content and mostly below average ratings, making it a publication that should probably be avoided.

I think if you love to watch t.v. then you must read the t.v. guide magazine. I love the articles it has in it . You can read interviews with stars and catch up on what is going on with your favorite shows. You have your t.v. show listings also. What more could you ask for in one magazine. It is a great... review »

I have been addicted to TV as long as I can remember, and I like to know what is coming on so I will not miss anything. With all the cable channels, there are so many choices, and it is fun juggling the TV schedules. I have subscribed to TV Guide for awhile and have witnessed its extreme makeover. It...

I have read the original TV Guide magazine from several years ago avidly.  I waited quite some time  for the new look to take place and purchased several of these magazines hoping for it's "new look" to also have a great addition of change.  Unfortunatley, there was none.

While the magazine changed from a small little magazine to a big one full of color and zillions of pictures, articles and bits to boot, the appearance was great.  The articles were  well-written, and some were fun.  Others contained tons of gossip, and others were more information than you really want to know, similar to...

I used to enjoy sitting down to read the tv guide. Yes I said read the tv guide. I enjoyed the articles and I always knew what was on when. The articles are still ok, but you cant ever find out what is on tv, especially for the daytime. I remember I couldn't even find out what time the macys thanksgiving parade was on. I have learned that it is much easier to look on the tv guide channel but with that you cant look ahead for planning. You used to know a week in advance and now you are lucky if you know an hour in advance. Yes I miss the way it was, the old tv guide.

Sorry the new T V Guide is like reading an enteertainment magazine, not a T V Guide.  Get rid of the stupid articles and go back to just listing what is playing.  You are T V Guide not Entertainment Tonight. 20 oages of junk and 1/2 a page of listing, so small you need a magnafying glass to see them.  They even got rid of the size.  Compact and easy to handle. To the larger magazine style.  I did not order a magazine. I ordered T V Guide.

At least with the old version a person knew what was on tv !  I am disabled and pretty much home bound.  The tv is on almost constantly.  I like to watch movies and there are no listings for the movies in the daytime.  It is poor listing, aggravating to try and find what you are looking for and just pretty much useless.  When my subscription runs out I sure won't be renewing it !

Most people use the television listings from their local newspaper to keep informed about what's on TV and at what time. But for those who prefer, there is one publication that provides television listings and comes tailor- made for individual regions around the country. The magazine is TV Guide, a weekly publication for those who like television and the small- screen stars that make it popular.

Magazine Commentary:

TV Guide is a magazine whose primary purpose is to keep readers informed about television shows and when they will be shown in your local area. It's one of the few magazines that...

I have been a TV Guide reader for a long time and over the past years, it has undergone a huge makeover, becoming what it is today.  Before it used to be a small sized magazine with just basically television listings and a few articles, and that was it.  Now the magazine is normal magazine size with less emphasis on television listings and more on celebrity gossip.  I was a little disappointed in the new format because it doesn't give great tv listings which is the reason I look to tv guide.  I like television but am a frequent user of the VCR, so good tv listings are important so I don't miss... review »

The absolute worst thing I can't stand about TV Guide is how free they are with spoilers about your favorite shows. If they're not blowing a plot point in the articles, they give you everything you (dont) need to know in the show descriptions.

TV Guide changed its format recently to something that is more like Entertainment Weekly - shorter articles with less substance, and more celebrity "fluff" than descriptions about shows. When they changed the size of the magazine to the larger glossy, they lost a lot of quality content. It is difficult to find out what is on when it isn't prime time, and...

I have been a subscriber for many years.  I do like the new magazine format because you can fold it open flat.  The previous small magazine could not do that.  But the guide is lacking in a lot of other areas.

There are minimal daytime listings!  They only list evening programs and even that stops at 11 PM.  So you're really not getting your money's worth with so much info missing.  It is really annoying when you want to watch daytime TV and you don't know what is on unless you channel surf and I hate doing that.  I would rather look in the guide and see what is on to make my choice. ...

I am a bzzagent and signed up to review TV guide, not knowing what it was going to be like. The last time I actually read a TV guide it was a very small book that was mostly done in black and white. I mean honestly who needs a book to tell them whats on when you have a cable guide and internet guide? Well imagine my surprise when this wonderful large magazine gets delivered to my door week after week. I honestly cant wait to read through the articles, to see the cheers and jeers, to see what is going on with what show or actor./actress. Even my four kids cant wait to read the articles in the magazine.... review »

The national TV Guide was first published on April 3, 1953. Its premiere issue cover featured a photograph of Lucille Ball's and Desi Arnaz's newborn son, Desi Arnaz, Jr. TV Guide as a national publication resulted from Walter Annenberg's Triangle Publications' purchase of numerous regional television listing publications such as TV List, TV Forecast, TV Digest, Television Guide and TV Guide. The launch as a national publication with local listings in April, 1953 became an almost instant success with the magazine becoming the most read and circulated magazine in the country by the 1960s. The initial... review »

I received this subscription as a gift from my daughter.  What a useless magazine, the only thing it is good for is reading articles about tv shows and finding out if the show is a rerun or not.  There is hardly anything in there about movies, no listings during the night, don't they know that the movie channels show movies all night?  I watch TCM more than any other channel and I can't even find the movies listed, I have to go to TCM's website and print out their monthly guide.  So I don't even need this worthless magazine.  If I want to read all the other gossip I can read one of many entertainment... review »

Why anyone would subscribe to this is beyond me.  It is nothing but a celebrity gossip magazine.  Where are all the listings?  Half of the local ones are not there, it shows channels I don't even have in my area.  There are no daytime listings, no listings after 10 pm for heavens sake.  No movie descriptions to speak of. I have written and complained to them more than once, but to no avail.  No changes have been made since they came out with this disastrous "full sized" magazine.  The only thing this is good for is to see if a program (only between 7 pm and 10 pm) is a rerun!  Wow, that's... review »

I recently bzzed for TV Guide and was able to try several copies free.  I loved the magazine!  It is just as much fun as reading People but is focused on your favorite shows.  If you like to keep up with or ahead of your shows, this magazine is for you.  They have redone the design so that is full paged and all color.

I also like the section that tells you about all the movies that will be showing that week.  So, if you have some down time, you know what you can watch or even record for later.  If you like to read and love your tv shows, you'll like TV Guide.
