T is For Trespass —

Sue Grafton never fails to deliver a strong characterization, well crafted plots, a goodly number of twists and turns to keep you rivetted while never resorting to unfair tactics like withholding vital info until the very last moment.  There is nothing to dislike about her books, and to discuss it more fully is to take away the surprise of unravelling the mystery as you read along (always a problem when discussing mystery novels.)   I only have one question or criticism or maybe it is just a query.....What will Sue Grafton do when she runs out of letters of the alphabet????   It is a cool gimmick, but it is somewhat old at this stage of the game.   I felt much the same way when James Patterson kept using partial quotes from nursery rhymes.  It seemed to become forced and at times as if they were really stretching for the titles, and the titles are often misleading in relation to the story....Pretty weak criticism and it shouldn't deter anyone from reading a well crafted mystery.  Maybe it is just too late at night, and I shouldn't be trying to critique somebody who is so successful at what she does time and again.   I guess what I am uncomfortable with is the formula quality.   I am reminded about how those who teach literature are so snide about popular fiction and the largest criticism is a tendency to formulas that are successful rather than true creativity, and how over time, you can guess where a story line will go and how an author will handle their characters and dialogue and description.  To date this hasn't happened in Sue Grafton's series (nor Patterson)  As an author, she has a distinctive style, and you can identify an excerpt pretty readily after reading just a couple of her books.  I guess I would hate her offerings to be lumped into the Harlequin Romance category (not to criticize the guilty pleasure of a light romance novel) but to lump her in with formulaic authors who lack originality or quality in story crafting or characterization.   I don't want her books to ever become "predictable" which is death in the mystery genre.  So by all means enjoy the letter "T" along with any other earlier letters you may have missed.  I am just  hoping that reaching the letter Z will result in a new and fresh approach to well crafted mystery plots.
