T-Mobile - G1 Cell Phone —

The T-Mobile G1 is a great phone, but that's not all that it is.  It's also a digital music player, a mobile internet device, an email reader, a camera, a camcorder, a video game console, and more.  There is also a built-in marketplace where you can go to download new applications to truly personalize and enhance your phone.  There are thousands of applications.  Most apps cost a small fee (starting at $0.99 for many) but there are tons of free apps as well.

A few apps I would recommend are:

  • Astrid : A great task manager
  • Abduction : A great game that you play by tilting the phone back and forth.
  • Shazam : Let's you tag and remember songs that you hear on the radio.
  • Twidroid : A great Twitter client
  • Weatherbug : So you always know what weather you are going to run into.

Some Pros:

  • Full physical QWERTY keyboard (onscreen keyboard as well if you don't feel like opening the physical keyboard)
  • A2DP support for use with bluetooth stereo headsets
  • Camera with auto focus (allows you to scan barcodes)
  • Great apps market
  • Open-Source Operating System (allows for greater innovation)

Some Cons:

  • Need an adapter to use wired headsets/headphones (adapter is included with phone)
  • T-Mobile 3G coverage isn't available everywhere.  Edge is pretty fast but better 3G coverage would be great.  T-Mobile is expanding this all the time though.

If you were looking to get an iPhone but don't want to switch to AT&T then this is a great option.  I've had one since October 2008 and really like it.
