These are not turkey franks, they're salty franks.

Normally, I don't eat hot dogs. Too much fat, sodium, nitrates, and there's the mystery meat factor. I never know which body part(s) I'll be getting. Still, from time to time I'll have one when we're out at a family barbecue in the summertime or at a fair. But very rarely do I eat them.

Not long ago someone offered us a pack of Sweet Meadow Farms Turkey Franks to try. Ok, I know better but throwing caution to the wind I said ok.

We tried them. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!  They were horrible. Really horrible! We were choking on them they were so bad.

All I could taste was salt with some greasy texture. I couldn't taste any turkey at all. Just salt and fat. I forgot -  for some reason companies think they have to put MORE salt in turkey franks than in regular hot dogs. What are they thinking?????? There's already a ton of sodium in hot dogs. To add more,(and boy did they with this product) is like having a glass of seawater and putting a handful of salt in it.

I will never eat these franks again nor would I suggest anyone in their right mind or otherwise, buy them.    Don't do it pass them buy. If you want to try turkey franks go for the natural food section or a natural food place or try a place that raises and sell turkeys. Big difference!!!!

The only reason there is even one star is because I had to click on it or it would not have been published. This product does not deserve even the one star.

The natural ones are really good and not salty like these. Nothing is as salty as these - first there was salt and then they threw something in and called them turkey franks. Salty dogs - uck!y

The company name does not ring a bell. The grocery close my house is a very small IGA. I have to go about a half hour to a bigger store to find lots of items. I keep a list though and look when I go.

Thanks for your comment. If you've got a yen for hot dogs, try the natural ones. I hope to pick up a pack this week. Then I'll write a review on it .

Good to know. I am not a huge hot dog fan either, and I hate the salty ones as well.

LadyMagic wrote on May 16, 2008 at 4:33PM

The ones I truly like are the natural ones I tried. No chemicals and low salt. Beef or chicken natural dogs are good too. Next I see a pack, we'll pick it up and I'll write a review.

I have tried turkey hotdogs and they just don't taste right and you are right, the sodium is crazy. Turkey sausage is great but they can't seem to make a decent tasting turkey hotdog!

About 4wks - longer or shorter depending on taste and the exact ingredients.

The all natural ones are a safe bet, and delicious.

I never tried making my own. How long does it take?

I've made my own hotdogs for many years because of the "Mystery Meat". I first learned how to do it in college, and it's amazing what might be dumped into the mix - potted meat is better for you. Many companies add the extra fat to make the product "sweeter" and others dump in the salt. Like you said - the normal hotdog already has more salt in the preservatives than anyone would ever need, so I can only assume that the Meadow Farms food scientist missed a chemistry lecture or two. And where are their "taste panels"? Since hotdogs are my hubby's favorite food group, I had to do some adjusting, and have lowered fat, increased meat (turkey, venison, chicken) and kept the nitrates in a very low zone. It can be done, and hubby doesn't really notice the difference.

I'm not a big salt eater to start with, so I know I'd hate these. Tks for the warning.

I know what you mean . I've only found two I liked for veggie dogs, can't remember what they were... oh well.... I still think the natural hot dogs I tasted were the best. Natural food stores have them and they have no chemicals (nor ton of salt). Thanks for your comment Patty!

Your welcome. The natural ones arethe best!

It's like how soda companies feel like they have to make diet soda ULTRA sweet to make up for no real sugar in it. Yeck. I once had veggie hotdogs and almost keeled over. Those things were dreadful. Salty, weird, and just....not good. I don't eat hotdogs either but have yet to find a suitable substitute. So I eat grilled chicken breast and let the others chow down on the fat and chemicals. lol..

Thanks for the heads up. I eat turkey dogs but have never had this brand. Jo
