Curcumin: an anti-oxidant with multiple health possibilities.

It's hard to "love" an herbal product, but I'm hedging my bets on health benefits as a result of both reading about studies and following up with things that seem appropriate to my case. **Swanson Superior Herbs Curcumin Complex** is one of the products I use. This product is standardized and each bottle contains 60, 900 mg capsules. Serving size is one capsule, once or twice daily with water and food. Each capsule contains three forms of *curcumin* and 5mg *Bioperine Natures Thermonutrient*. *Bioperine* is a patented black-pepper extract that, in animal lab studies, has proven to be a bio-absorption enhancer. *Curcumin* itself has been used in cooking and traditional medicine, most notably in India, for many centuries. In animal studies, curcumin has had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-histaminic effects. In these same lab animals (rats and mice), side effects were rare except that particularly high doseage *could cause liver and kidney damage*. Cholesterol lowering has been proven in studies on egg production with dietary additions of curcumin. And, finally? The upbeat Dr. Mamet Oz cites cumin (curcumin) as raising a low libido because it increases blood flow and circulation. Dr. Oz suggests additions to food three times weekly and has multiple recipes on his website using cumin as an ingredient! For me? I'm working on lowering cholesterol and will gladly accept any positive effects otherwise. I'll be glad when more studies are done on humans to definitively determine the effects of this long-known herb. **PLEASE! Talk to your doctor before combining herbs with other medical products and especially, in this case, if you have liver and/or kidney problems which might be negatively effected by curcumin.**
