Susannin's Auction House is one of few auction houses in the city of Chicago. With the demise of Sotheby's in Chicago, Susannin's and Leslie Hindman have taken up more of the market. Not all auctions at Susannin's are of stellar quality, but it covers a broader range than Sotheby's every did. In addition, Sean, the owner, is extremely personable and easy to work with.
Buying at auction at Susannin's requires a bit of knowledge, since catalogues don't give that much information and like all auction houses the estimated sales price is usually undervalued. I have been to some auctions where the offerings have been excellent: phenomenal jewelry, paperweights and furniture, and some auctions where the offerings were not in good condition. It is a bit like going to a flee market and landing on some exceptional pieces. For me this is always a fun experience and a chance to expose myself to different periods of art and architecture.
In addition to producing auctions, Susannin's also has a four day antique fair in the Fall. This is a wonderful way to see everything at once from dealers from all over. It takes place at Susannin's large 4 level warehouse, and is as engaging and it is informative.
In short, I recommend Susannin's as a auction house, as they are easy to work with, open to lookers who visit prior to auction but may not participate, and often offer exceptional items that one might get lucky with on a low bid. Going to Susannin's is also a great learning experience as it gives you a chance to train your eye to see various levels of quality and gain knowledge. Just visiting is a good way to familiarize yourself with certain periods of art or furniture and attending several auctions can get you up to speed on the value of rugs, paintings, jewelry or whatever is it that you are looking for. In addition, auctions are thrilling and a general good way to find unique pieces at decent prices.
Cross your fingers, and get your favorite paddle number. Do you feel lucky?
