This movie grows on you. At first when I saw the movie in the theater I was not that impressed but later I began to see what the movie was really about. A man sent to earth by is father, raised by humans but yet with a greater mission. One lone man sent to save the world. Born of the house of El. This man is a type of Christ. There are so many things in this movie that points to God. Jesus was sent here to be raised by humans and he could be seen as an alien because he was not of this world. Read the book "The Gospel according to the world's greatest superheroes". Great book it shows the relationship between the superman genre and the bible. When Superman goes on the rock that Lex created out of kryptonite he gets weak and he is beaten and stabbed in the side with a piece of kryptonite. Jesus was beaten and stabbed also by the very ones he wanted to save. Superman as he was being beaten up yells, "I'm still Superman," even though his powers were gone. Then he is pushed into a watery grave symbolizing death. When Lois rescues him he says he has to go back. Back to save the ones who wanted to kill him, humans. So he came to save us anyway despite the way he was treated. But Jor-el his father speaks to him saying, "It is for their capacity for good that I send them my only son". Just as God did for us by sending his only son Jesus to save mankind from their sins. This kind of self-sacrifice comes only from God. Superman dives into the water to get the island that is going to destroy the whole east coast. It weakens him but he must take care of what was going to kill us. Jesus had to die to take away what was going to kill us, sin. John the Baptist said, "Behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the whole world." Superman pushes the rock into space with his last bit of strength, then he falls to earth as if dead. The world thinks he is dead or nearly dead. At one earlier point in the movie he flies in and catches a sign that reads, GRACE. He saves the world globe from the top of the Daily Planet and places it gently on the ground. Later after he learns he has a son himself. He goes to his son's bed and says to his son the words that Jor-el said to him. "My life will be seen through your eyes ...,The Son has become the father as the father becomes the Son. In other words, Jesus said, "If you have seen me you have seen the father." It has come full circle. Superman foreshadows Christ. Who else would be a Superman but Jesus Christ who now sits at the right hand of God as a man, the vicarious man who substitutes our broken humanity for his own humanity unbroken and at one with the Father in the spirit. So now we are at one with God through Jesus Christ. No longer separated with included, in fact adopted into the family of the Triune God. Read The Shack, by William P. Young and anything by C. Baxter Kruger such as God is for Us and his other book Jesus and the Undoing of Adam.
