Superbad is a typical teen movie- our heroes Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are nerdy best friends desperately trying to fit in and get laid in their last days of high school. The two decide the perfect way to prove themselves is to obtain alcohol for a party, especially to impress their respective love interests Jules (Emma Stone) and Becca (Martha MacIsaac). But when cops, party animals, bums, faltering friendship, preposterous fake ID's, car wrecks, and everything in between gets in the way, it leads to a simple, if daunting, errand becoming an escapade that gets more and more ludicrous by the second.
This movie is as crude as they get- from American Pie to Mall Rats. The sexual jokes are frequent and incredibly juvenile. This will be a thrill to those who have a low-brow sense of humor and a nuisance to those to whom 3rd grade potty humor does not appeal.
One redeeming aspect is that the wreckless and irresponsible behaviors the characters partake in are shown not to pay off. The film addresses the immorality of taking advantage of an inebriated person, and shows the consequences of teen drinking (humiliating vomiting and collapsing, regretted behavior, etc). It demonstrates the folly of attempting to fit in or get laid at any cost and making oneself miserable in the process. But the film ultimately rides more on dick jokes than it does on morals, and the lesson is at best an afterthought.
