For those of you who have ever watched Curb Your Enthusiasm, you are familiar with that unease feeling you have as you watch the shows main character(s) slowly get themselves into deeper and deeper trouble. At the same time, the situations are so creative and perverse that they are hilarious. There you sit between humor and shock. So is the case with Superbad.
The story follows three high school geeks in their final semester over the course of a weekend as they strive to lose their virginity before school ends and they head off to college in the fall. They have heard stories of women/girls getting drunk and having sex with the wrong guys. They want to be the wrong guy.
The story twists and turns through a series of misadventures as the three of them are invited to a popular girls party with the one condition that they bring the booze for the party. They acquire a fake ID (under the name McLovin), chase down liquor in a variety of ways, dance in a surreal way with the police and make it to the party. Seth Rogen (of Knocked Up fame) not only stars in but also wrote the script. He has a touch for bringing the common, unattractive guy to life in a very likable way.
Most guys, except for the former high school football players, will empathize with angst that Seth, Evan and McLovin suffer as they seek the approval of the opposite sex. As I watched the movie play, I thought of the joy I'll have as my kids grow up and go through high school. Unfortunately, they will have to be much older to see this raunchfest for guidance as you are hit with profanity and nudity within the first minute and it never stops.
Overall, I thought it was a very well done movie. I never relaxed enough to fully enjoy the genius of the comedy as I uneasily watched one trainwreck after another. If you are looking for creative, raunchy modern version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, then you will find this movie very enjoyable.
