I raise and train baby parrots. I have Blue Front Amazons, Yellow Nape Amazons, Magna Double Yellow Heads, Congo African Grey and cockatiels.

The Amazons are a challenge during breeding season. It is not hard to read their emotions. They will flare their pupils and then they will go to pin points. This is the time to leave the bird alone. During breeding season they can be very cantankerous.  I use a dowel for my birds to step up on this time of year. The rest of the year they will hop right up on my arm and never bite.

I presently have two baby Yellow Napes that are 18 weeks old. They started talking when they were eight weeks old! They both have pretty good voices and seem to pick up words fairly easy. They will mimic the phone ringing and then say hello, then pause for a couple of seconds and start laughing. They both are saying about 5 or 6 words. They will hold up their foot when you tell them to shake. I have been letting them fly but I just  started to clip their wings. They let me hold their wing out and then I just take a pair of toe nail clippers and clip a feather. They will let me do the same thing with their toe nails. They are going to be very large Yellow Napes. The female seems to be the quicker learner so far. You don't have to hand feed a baby for it to bond to you. My first Yellow Nape was a baby from Honduras. It took a few months but she became the most loving bird I have ever owned.

They do sometimes prefer one person over others in in the household. But if you work with them from the beginning they will accept every person in the house. The reason they usually bond with only one person is only one person takes care of the bird. If you start out with every one changing the water and feeding and cleaning the bird will become dependent on everyone. With clean water and  a quality seed mix along with  fresh veggies and fruit they will stay healthy for years. They are a pet for life, so you have to plan on getting old with your bird. Overall they make a much better pet than a cat or a dog IMHO. They will entertain your friends as they never get tired of showing off.

I would like to suggest to anyone who is considering  a pet that you should go and buy a book that is about the pet you are considering. Read that book two or three times. If you still want the pet, then look up a breeder or pet shop to buy yourself a bird. They take time and patience to train, but the end results are great and in my book ,very much worth it!

Be picky and tell yourself to shop around. Don't necessarily buy the very first bird you come across. You will know when you have found your bird. A hand fed baby doesn't mean that they come trained. Not everyone has the time to work with babies like I do. It takes a while for the bird to know and trust you. It takes time to build that bond with a bird.

There is one thing I know for sure, it will be hard to sell these little guys after spending as much time with them as I have for the last 15 weeks. I retired early so I could devote all my time to my birds.

I hope this helps I guess that if anyone has any other questions I can answer them by e-mail. I am using their picture as my avatar.
