Binita my Yellow Nape Amazon

Binita is my Yellow Nape Amazon Parrot. When she came to live with us 25 years ago, she was a little baby. We hand feed her a mixture of baby pablum, milk,  peanut butter and mashed bananas. I placed her on her perch, tied a bib around her neck and feed her with a spoon crimped up on both sides.

Over the years she has been a great companion. She has a 350 word vocabulary, says her A B C's, Counts up to 50 and sings opera. She says "hello" when the phone  rings.

Several years ago we lived in the country. I was in the kitchen washing dishes. We had Binita's cage setting close to the door. I turned around to see a man standing in my living room. I said " I was raised to knock before I inter someones house". He said " mam I did knock and someone said "come in". I made sure my door was locked after that.

The following is information that I believe very interesting.

Yellow Nape Amazon Parrot in the wild

Green is primary color . Yellow on nape- and front above the eyes. Some birds have no yellow feathers or very few at all on the nape. Bend of wing is green. Wing speculum is red with some blue. Secondary coverts are pale yellow on wing edge. Beak is a dark gray. Cere (area just above the beak) is black, yellow ring around the eyes, orange eyes. Legs are light gray. Immature birds have little or no yellow on nape and have a dark iris, as they age most will quire the yellow.

Average length is 12 inches to 15 inches

The Yellow Nape can live to be eighty years old.

You are unable to determ the Sex by appearance. DNA, surgical sexing or blood testing is the only way to know with certainty.

The origin of the Yellow Nape Amazon ranges from southern Mexico, along Pacific slope through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua to northwestern Costa Rica. The Yellow-Nape is rated as one of the top three talking birds with the Double Yellow Head as number one and the Blue Front Amazon being third. They learn new words easily and have very clear voices. They are also great at singing, laughing and whistling. In the wild many parrot species, feeds on berries, nuts, seeds and fruit.

Most Amazons have their morning and evening "jungle calls," but are quiet during the day, and are contented to talk and sing.

The Amazon is not shy and will often perform for strangers this is why we often see these parrots in bird shows and at zoos.

If you do not give them adequate room to exercise and toys to inter act with they can develop feather picking problems and will if they are neglected.

A good verity of feed should include fresh vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fresh fruit, grains, and sprouts DO NOT GIVE GRIT to any parrot species.

Amazons love to be showered this helps to keep their feather in good condition and keep them from having a musky odor.

Watch the body signals and learn to recognize their moods and do not pick up an Amazon when its eyes are flashing and the tail is flared. This an indication the it is up set.
