I was looking to try out the new iTunes movie rental feature and stumbled across this movie - Sunshine. I have to say that I had never heard of it and the central idea for the plot (that was contained in the description of the rental) seemed that it would require a bit of a stretch to accept (reigniting the sun via a detonation of a bomb near its surface). But the reviews on iTunes seemed pretty positive and some of the comments even alluded to the film being a tip of the hat to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Being a sci-fi movie fan I decided to hit the rental button and take my chances.

I was pleasantly surprised by the well crafted visuals of the movie. On that front, it far exceeded my expectations. The story was, for the most part, straight forward though it definitely had undercurrents of crew members on the verge of losing their sanity as their several year trip to the sun wore on. At times, the undercurrent was subtle, and at others it was hallucinogenic. Sunshine itself was cast as a character in the movie (how could it not be with the movie being named for it). It was presented as a force that could both be savage at times, yet cleansing and nurturing at others. Something that we take for granted here on earth, but without which we could not survive.

The movie was full of contrasts - extreme heat of the sun coexists with the shadowy dark frozen vacuum of space, a puny space ship with a payload to reignite the sun traveling towards the incredible large orb of the sun, and the epic two year journey to the sun by the spaceship and its inhabitants contrasted with the eight minute journey of light from the sun to earth. It just seemed that everything human was a struggle against the odds, while the power of the sun effortless.

There were echoes of 2001 A Space Odyssey - in the way the ship's crew members orally communicated with ship's computer that would answer in an overly calm voice appending the crew member's name at the end of the sentence, the way that the ship took over control of the ship disregarding commands from its human occupants not to do so, and of course the flashback sequences that grow in frequency as the movie progresses. But don't despair, Sunshine does not devolve into an incomprehensible acid trip at the end...well at least not on the scale of 2001.

I think somewhere along the way of watching Sunshine, a part of my mind detached itself and got sucked into the diegetic of the movie while the rest remained ensconced in my head. The movie does take some twists and turns that play with your mind.

Bottom line - it was an entertaining and well crafted piece of cinema, but not intriguing enough to warrant a return visit.

To be fair I should mention that my wife who watched this movie along with me was asking for her two hours back - she would rate Sunshine one star (no pun intended).

In response to CrystaBush's comment from Feb 29, 2008 at 9:44PM:

Yes indeed - movie rentals have come iTunes. Couple of things to watch out for: 1) once you hit the rent button, you will have 30 days to start watching the rental, but more importantly, 2) once you _start_ watching the rental, you have 24 hours from the minute you started to complete watching the movie. For some people this may seem like a reasonable amount of time, but I think it fails the parent rental timeframe. There are often times that you start watching a movie one evening and decide to continue the next, so if you started at 8:45PM on the first evening, you have to complete watching by 8:45PM the next evening - hard to guarantee with kids!
