I've had this thing for almost 7 years, I think.  I've gotten others for friends, travel, etc. and am always happy with them.  It's only as big as it needs to be and fulfills it's one purpose well.  I think at $30 it's expensive, but I can find them online or on sale for less regularly when I'm getting it as a gift.

Open the top, put in water, close lid, press 'heat' button and in 30 seconds it's ready.  Put cup underneath and hit 'dispense' and you're done.

Now, the down side:  Most cups will fit under here easily.  My oversized mugs will not.  It does give off a lot of steam, so be careful...

I first got my Hot Shot when I was living in a dorm in college. You aren't allowed to have anything with exposed heating elements, but something like this appliance was within the rules. It let me make tea, oatmeal, hot chocolate, even instant soup. I don't know what I would have done without it. Now that I live in a real apartment, I still use the Hot Shot all the time. If I just want to heat up water, this is what I use. It is faster than boiling water in the stove or in the microwave, and I'm sure it uses less energy. It will heat up enough to make about two mug-fulls of hot water. I'd say it...

I really like the Sunbeam Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser.  I  have no cons listed for it since I really have never encountered a reason for complaint.

Before the hot shot, i would either use a kettle on the stove or use the microwave to heat water.  I realized the cons of my old methods pre-Hot Shot.  I'm not a fan of turning on the stove if I'm only making myself a hot beverage.  Too time consuming that way.  Hot Shot is much quicker.  It beats the microwave because i don't worry about burning myself on the handle of my favorite mug, which fits the Hot Shot too.  As a bonus, it's...

This is by far the most useful small appliance I have purchased for my kitchen.  This product boils 2 cups of water in one minute and is great for melting chocolate when baking, making soups, making a quick ramen, making cocoa, coffee, or tea, and even for heating up baby bottles.

Thought it was nice when I saw it at my aunts for the first time.  After buying and trying I included the Hot Shot for many relatives presents at Christmas time.
