For the longest time I didn't want a bread maker because they seemed so big and took up so much counter space. My mother-in-law bought this Sunbeam Breadmaker for me for Christmas last year and I've been quite pleased with it.

I really like that it has somewhat of a slim design, the bulk of the space is taken up from front to back instead of side to side. It's approximate measurements are 14"L x 10"W.

Since I've had the breadmaker I haven't gone back to making homemade, because it's so much easier. You just attach the kneading blade to the pan, add your ingredients, push a few buttons and you have a typical loaf of bread in three hours. It's great not having to knead it, shape it, keep track of the time, and worry about how it's doing in the oven.

You can use your own homemade recipes with the breadmaker, but need to accommodate them with breadmaker yeast and if you're making whole wheat bread, you'll need wheat gluten. Or you can try the recipes that Sunbeam includes in their instruction manual. I tried the French bread recipe and it turned out pretty good. Although, I do tend to stay with the breadmaker mixes, all you do is add water, the mix, and yeast. They turn out great!

You can also mix up sweet doughs, dough for bagels, and make jam, glazes, and even flavored butters and spreads! Talk about a multi-use breadmaker!

What I don't like about it is that there is a "hot plastic" odor, which fills the kitchen when the bread is baking. Although it doesn't affect the bread, it's still unpleasant. My mother-in-law thinks that over time this smell will lessen because she had the same problem with her Well-Built Breadmaker. I also recall a friend telling me that hers did this as well.

Also, sometimes the kneading blade bakes inside the bottom of the loaf and I have to dig it out. I'm sure this happens with other breadmakers too, you never get a "perfect" loaf like you do when making it from scratch.

Since I've had it I make bread more often and usually I'm very happy with the results.
