After having a pop-up tent trailer while the kids were growing up, we were ready to buy a travel trailer. Our first one was the Sun-Lite 210-RDB. (RDB stands for rear double bed.)

Some background information:

One reason we chose the Sun-Lite was because we didn’t want to replace our Chevy S10 truck so the weight of the trailer was a major factor. The second factor was the layout. We liked this one the best in the size and prize range we were looking at.

Specs:

We chose the 21-foot trailer. The trailer had everything we needed.

~The 210 RBH is listed as 22'2" long - that includes the hitch area.
~It is 70” wide.
~The interior height is 6 1/2'high. I know that doesn’t sound high, but one we were in barely cleared my husband’s head and he is 5'10" tall.
~It has a carrying capacity of 1260 pounds.
~The tire size is a C13.
~It will hold 31 gallons of fresh water.
~It will hold 30 pounds of gray and 30 pounds of black water. (That is what the water is called after using the shower and toilet, for example.)
~It has a vinyl roof with a 12-year limited warranty.
~It has R8 fiberglass insulation.
~The water heater is a 6-gallon gas heater
~The exterior is fiberglass
~There is a 2-year limited structural warranty.
~It has a 30-amp power cord, 45-amp converter with charger. It is pre-wired for air conditioning. There is a power vent in the bathroom and a patio light as well as ceiling lights.
~It has electric brakes that were installed after we bought it and are wonderful! We have a light in the truck and the trailer brakes work when the trailer needs additional help stopping.

About my trailer on a more personal note:

We liked this layout because it has a 3-sided square sitting area which surrounds a very large (82"x60") dinette table. The cushions on the seat and on the back lie on the table if you want to sleep additional people. This area was a selling point for us. Many trailers do not have this very, very comfortable area in which to watch TV or read. The only negative is that the table does have to be raised if you want it as an eating table. You can keep it as a coffee table – low- but then there is no room for your feet if you sit up. The table is very heavy. I folded it up and place it on the sides of the couches and then set it up again. Many would find the table too heavy.

I didn’t find the unit to be of super high quality but you have to remember we are talking about a light, inexpensive trailer. If this is all you can afford then you’ll deal with the leaks like we did.

There was storage under the cushions, under the bed, across the length of the unit from the outside and storage in the front of the unit on the outside.

There were only two drawers and I would like to have a couple more but we found the storage to be very adequate.

There was a place to put the TV when traveling and a shelf when we are not. While traveling we stored it, along with a fan and my mini George Foreman Grill, under the couch.

There were cabinets over the double Thermoplastic white Sink and under it. The sink was great and had a lifetime warranty. There was a 3-burner range but no oven. We had an optional built-in microwave.

I was very impressed with the refrigerator. It was the size of two dormitory sized refrigerators with a vegetable bin and plenty of storage on the door. There was a decent sized freezer.

There was very little counter space making the huge dinette come in really handy. We bought a burner cover which we used to keep our coffee on, still giving us one burner available at all times.

The bathroom was adequate. It was called a dry bath meaning that the shower/tub was a separate unit. After being on the road one year for 91 days the bathroom and entire trailer became much too small.

The trailer had a smoke detector, fire extinguisher, a dead bolt lock on the entry door, and an entry step.

We had an optional antenna for the television. There was a built in radio/tape player with really great sound. For $120 we could have converted it to a CD player but for $30 we could buy a portable CD player. This was 2003.

The bedroom area had a double bed (54"x74") with a privacy curtain. There were two wardrobes and I found that adequate.

The trailer had a huge window in the front, which had a rock guard to protect it while traveling. The rock guard lifted up so we could see outside from the front of the trailer.

Two options we had were an awning and central air conditioning.

I won’t get into when electricity versus propane is used but we had 2 propane tanks with an automatic changeover from one to the other which was wonderful..

So what is it like to tow?

Although our truck certainly knew it was towing something, we were very pleased with how it handled. When we upgraded to an SUV towing was even easier.

Jo's Viewpoint

In retrospect we would have had an easier time had we spent a bit more for a better quality trailer. However we had to take our vehicle into consideration. I am going to recommend this only if you can deal with some leaks and it is all you can tow and afford.

-- Thanks - this was light! It was great because we had (still have it) a 96 Chevy S10 (very very small truck) that pulled this with no problem. I can't imagine the Durango won't handle it just fine. The best thing to do is even just go to Edmunds.com and find you Durango. It will say how much it will pull and then you should know about how much (even used someone should know) the camper weighs. Have fun!! We love camping and are really disappointed because my mom fell and due to being the only child we've had to put our summer plans on hold but I only have one mom and hopefully many summers! Jo

Wow, really great review. We are looking to buy a used camper. This will be our first one and we are going crazy trying to find the right one. You didn't say what you were driving? I have a Dodge Durango (not a hemi) and it looks like we will only be able to get a 21' too. Thanks again for your great review!

Good question...there was a storage area under the couch that leaked. That was a real pain because it was a large space so we couldn't put a our heater there, etc. The sink leaked!! They tried to fix it but never could. We never had roof leaks. We had so much condensation it was crazy. We still do- it's normal but not like what we had. In the end it wasn't a horrible trailer. We have had our share especially in the first year with our current one. As a starter the Sun-Lite is really ok. I always have a hard time rating things like this i.e. I wouldn't have chosen this brand as our 2nd one but we went cross country with it and managed. Jo

Really an excellent review, Jo. You covered a lot of territory in this and did it well. I dream about something like this someday but haven't bit the bullet yet. --Bob
