The Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor is one item I always recommend to a parent-to-be and one I wouldn't have wanted to go without those first few months with a new baby. The monitor is easily portable, with a decent range so you don't feel like you're tethered to the camera. The picture is fairly clear, with an impressive night vision so you can see your child both day and night. It's perfect for checking in on your newborn, and also quite useful for checking in on a naughty toddler who won't stay in his bed! The charge lasts quite a while so you don't need to worry about losing battery quickly.
The camera can be positioned easily to either perch on the side of a bassinet, or be mounted on a wall looking down into a crib or bed. The power cord is a decent length, so you can keep the cord out of baby's reach so they don't pull the camera down onto their head.
The camera and monitor are easily portable to bring on vacations, to grandparents, or to switch between rooms.
