I have been fortunate to have very few health issues in my lifetime, but among the few annoyances I have to deal with, sinus congestion and allergies rank at the top of my list. I try to deal with the problem by taking allergy tablets, using sinus sprays, etc., with varying degrees of success. Inhaling steam and other fragrances can also help, and one over the counter product that claims to relieve congestion using aromatic fumes is Shower Soothers, a product designed for use in the shower.
Aromatherapy Commentary:
Shower Soothers are round, flat tablets measuring about 1.5 inches in diameter and one- half inch in thickness. The tablets are individually wrapped, feature a blue/green color, and begin to dissolve quickly upon contact with water. Placing a tablet on the shower floor is all that is necessary to activate. Once the water touches the tablets, they release aromatic fragrances of eucalyptus, menthol, and camphor. These vapors fill the shower with their unique scent, supposedly helping people with sinus problems or allergy problems by alleviating some of the congestion.
Shower Soothers are a unique product in that they are used in the shower and supposedly relieve sinus congestion through the use of aromatic vapors. There is no claim that they completely open up the nasal passages, but they are supposed to provide some relief from common sinus problems related to colds, allergies, and the like. I have had sinus issues for as long as I can remember and I game to try anything that could help alleviate some of the annoyance.
Upon placing one of these on the shower floor, I turned the water supply knob to the right and waited for the big moment when my sinuses would start to feel clearer and I could breathe more freely. Unfortunately, nothing earth- shattering occurred. In fact, nothing even remotely close to mucus- free breathing occurred. The aroma from the combination of menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor vapors is pleasant and it certainly has a medicinal, herbal aura about it. But aside from the pleasant smell, there is nothing special about these tablets. My sinuses felt no better before than after and I began to wonder what the point was when the manufacturer created this product. The medicinal scent leads you to believe something good might happen, but nothing ever does.
Each Shower Soother tablet is large in size and depending on how long you spend in the shower, they will easily last for one full showering session and might even be good for a second, but no more. As the water runs, you will notice a steady stream of green colored liquid running from the tablet to your drain. The tablet dissolves away slowly in this manner, continuing to shrink in size until it is completely gone. Those who take quick showers can save the remaining tablet for a second use. And that is good, because the price isn't cheap. Each small box contains only three tablets and sells for a price of about $5.00. Large boxes exist, but the per- tablet price isn't much better.
Bottom- Line Viewpoint:
Sinus problems are my lifelong curse and I have tried just about everything imaginable to lessen the annoyance and get on with my life. I had great hopes for Shower Soothers, but they turned out to be a worthless product masquerading as medicine. The smell is nice, but I think I will save my money and buy a can of air freshener. Air fresheners smell better, last longer, and have about the same effect.
