I loved my time there.

Stony Brook University —

I went to Stony Brook from Jan 2002- December 2004, when I graduated. I am from Nassau county, and originally wanted to go far away to school, and had a terrible experience in Florida. After my first semester, I transfered to Stony Brook, and loved my time there.
At first it was hard to make friends- mainly because I was transfering in between semesters, and spent a lot of time off campus, but after semesters changed, and later getting an on campus job, things changed for the better.
I loved the majority of my classes, and some that I took changed my academic course. After taking intro to art history pt1, I decided to make Art History my minor. I ended up taking a bunch of classes in different topics, and the women's studies program let me know I only needed 2 more classes to complete a minor, so I did.
Some classes can be very large, but I was also in small ones- the smallest I think had 7 students total. In the bigger ones, if you don't have access to the professor as easily, TAs are a big help.
I liked the variety of food- essential to a vegetarian. I liked the landscape, and general look of things. The bus system is nice and user friendly. Having the LIRR train station right on campus is also a big advantage.
Seek out campus activities- there are many. Go to the Roth Regatta every year!
Personally, the biggest advantage was meeting my boyfriend there. When I missed SBU, I realized how much I missed him, and we started dating (its been almost 4 years). It is a good place to meet like minded individuals.
