Although I read this book several years ago for my book club review, I am still haunted by the horrible experience this family endured.  In my naitivity, I was shocked to learn of such happenings of the 20th century--during my lifetime!!  "Stolen Lives" refers to the fact that a mother and her teenage children, in the prime of their lives, are falsely imprisoned for the father's political doings, after he himself has been murdered.  They were kidnapped and then held prisoners in abandoned places where only those who held them captive knew of their whereabouts.  Their other family members didn't know if they were dead or alive.  Their living conditions were horrendous with no medical attention for their parasites or other maladies.  Their only contact with the outside world was when their meager food allowance was brought to them monthly.  You can imagine the creative ways they had of keeping it from spoiling as best as they could without the benefits of refrigeration or other means of storage.  At times the only way they had of seeing each other was by mirror.
