Okay today I want to persuade you into a more practical way to catch the ever elusive Catfish. Probably one of the most sought after sportfish there is, yes you heard me Sportfish! Many people shy away from catfish and for different reasons. They don't know how or hate to skin them or they have never experienced catching one. Catfish are aggressive fighters once you have hooked them and taste oh so good when cooked properly.

Well let me tell you something you may not know......Catfish are the easiest fish to clean if you know how.....All you need is a fillet knife and a catfish! You don't have to gut them or scale them, you just make 4 cuts and you're done. First fillet both sides along the backbone and the fillet the skin off and your done, ready to either freeze or cook them. Now that you know how to clean them let me tell you how to catch them!

Store Bought vs. Homemade Stink Bait

Store bought Stinkbait is costly and an unnecessary expense that only lines the pockets of big companies. It was the fisherman that started the craze so save your money and make your own. If you look at the labels you will find things such as Fish Oil, Garlic, Meat by products...and so on. Plus many will list Flour as well......So why not just become your own company and make it yourself? Especially now that the nights are warm and catfish are getting very active.

Okay for you lazy people you can skip the rest of this review and go to my Bottom Line but for those adventurers out there we will go through the Rednecks guide to making Catfish Stink Bait.

Okay you need a few ingredients to make your own.....Flour, Water, Bacon Grease (you can use chicken, pork, turkey or beef if you like) and rotten corn. Okay I can see the faces now......for Rotten Corn just take 1 can of corn and poke a few holes in the top of the can, then sit it in the sun for a few days....now back to the bait making.

Make a dough that is the consistency of play dough with your flour, water and grease, then add the rotten corn and save your corn juice in a jar with a lid. You can use it when your dough gets dry. I also add garlic to mine but you don't have too. I use an empty butter tub with the lid to hold my Stinkbait in.

Mold the dough around your hook and add enough weights to let your line sink to the bottom and you will get plenty of bites. The stronger the smell the more catfish will come to investigate. The grease will float off your dogh carrying the scent of the rotten corn which drives catfish nuts. If you use garlic that just adds to the available scent that waifs through the water. Each doughball will last about 30 minutes before dissolving in the water. Keep your tub of Stinkbait in your cooler so it stay stiffer( it also keeps it from getting rancid....lol)

Another variation for the dough is to get a small container of chicken livers and use that to make a dough. Either way you make it will not only save you money but catch catfish better than the store bought stuff. I have been making my own since I was 6 years old when my Dad taught me how to make it. I have caught some very nice catfish using it and it is cheaper than buying it.

.

Bottom Line

Now for those that buy their stinkbait you are paying anywhere from $3 to $8 for it while those of us that make our own can fish 24/7 for about 3 months and spend less than $5 by making our own

Store bought is fine if you just want to spend money but homemade is just as good if not better and you can use the money you save for something more useful. Fishing is not rocket science so don't be afraid to experiment on different doughs you use. Anything that has a strong scent and gives off a little oil will catch catfish. Now go out there a get to fishing and enjoy yourself!!

I do. I eat the Perch my husband and sons catch IF I don't see them before they're all looking like slabs of meat rather than pets and that is a fairly strong tasting fish. My husband knows how to make it just right and can fillet like an artist. Maybe I should try catfish. I just won't LOOK at it. :)

if you like your fish tender and light tasting then you would love it...;)

My husband is an avid fisherman and we own a marina on the lake and I am terrified of catfish. They look like...well...cats! Or people or ... ugh. I won't look at em, much less eat em! But this is a persuasive review nonetheless! :)

Yep I remember sitting on the river bank after a long day of fishing with my Dad and Uncle waiting for the fish to be done and watching the sunset....Oh those were the days! ;)

Too funny, reminded me of my every summer fishing trips to canada with my dad. I loved getting out there with him before everyone else got up! Back in time to fillet and toss together some cole slaw, fry hush puppies in a black iron skilled and lunch is served. I tried not to think about the other stuff too much! :-)

I hate cleaning them too, so I fillet them instead....Glad I could give you that moment from your past...;)

This brought back memories as my Dad took me catfish fishing when I was a kid. I hated watching him clean them and refused to eat them!

Now this is a review!!! I was wondering why my catfish the other night had a hint of bacon flavor...must have been the home made stuff.
We used a something like that, but yours is fancier
