I wanted to buy my 2-year-old son a kitchen of some kind for his birthday because I knew he would enjoy it, but I didn't want anything that looked too girlie. I found this Step 2 50s Diner by accident (just walked by it at Toys R Us) and thought it looked perfect. This toy is two-sided - one side is the kitchen and one side is the diner. There's a working jukebox, a bell to ring when your order's up, and one of the burners makes a water boiling noise or a frying noise depending on what pan you put on it. If I could make one adjustment, it would be that the toy make more noise, like water running at the sink.
The toy also came with a great supply of toy food, which my son loves to play with whether he's using the diner or not. Most of it is gray, with electric blue booth seats and a red kitchen. It's not an eyesore like so many big plastic toys can be. I think this toy has really promoted the development of pretend play for my son.
