Although this incident is not recent, it is typical of State Farm.  Two other State Farm insured home owners had the same experience we did with their roofs.
We had roof damage from a hail storm, and all our neighbors who were not insured with State Farm received new roofs.  Since our neighborhood requires wood roofs, it is costly to replace them.  State Farm declared our roof could be repaired and not replaced.  Two different roofers told us it was too damaged to walk on in order to repair and needed to be replaced.  State Farm would not budge and insisted on a low dollar payment to have the roof "repaired."  We knew that was not accurate because we had several estimates to repair or replace the roof and all the companies agreed it needed to be replaced.  In fact, we could find no one who would agree to repair it.  Forced to take their low estimate, we paid 4 times what they gave us and had the roof replaced, but State Farm did not know we had done that.  After receiving the check for the "repair"  State Farm canceled our insurance because, according to their letter, "our roof needed to be replaced."  How can any legitimate company tell you something can be repaired and then cancel you because they refused to pay to have it replaced?  I've talked to people who are happy with the low premiums State Farm offers, but when I ask if they've had any experience, they always say no.  Insurance should be for the times you need it, not a fund to enrich State Farm.  We switched to Farmers and the agent told me that State Farm was a joke in the industry.  She told me when you drive down the street after a bad storm and see individual spots repaired on a roof instead of a new roof, you can always tell it's State Farm insured.

Acts of god-most of these acts are covered uner comprehensive insurance when it comes to your car, this coverage protects your vehicle against fire, theft, vandalism, wind, hail, falling objects , and glass breakage to name a few

State Farm is ruining my life. My neighbor above my condo unit flooded my home and cause toxic mold to grow and destroy my newly renovated unit. I was forced out of my home with a newborn baby. State Farm did not care that my new baby was couch surfing and would not cover the expense of a hotel, even though we had provided doctor's letters as they requested. Rather than settle my case (they are my neighbor's insurance company, BTW), they have opted to counter sue me for financial elder abuse because I asked this neighbor to pay for the flood damaged caused my her leaky sink! I was told by my lawyer that this was a "tactic" to get me to drop my case as I may need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to defend myself. I am just sick over this. State Farm has taken the last year of my life away from me. While I should have been enjoying my new baby, I have become a prisoner to their many demands for documents and DAYS of depositions while they try and make me out to be a bad person. All I wanted was for State Farm to pay for the damage that occurred while I was sitting home, enjoying being a new Mommy, instead, I have become a defendant and am being threatened of loosing my life savings. I had to spend $80,000 out of my own pocket to pay for the repairs. They offered me $5,000. I am so sad and sick over this. How can this even be legal?

Ditto. Mar 08 hail storm in Douglasville GA. It seems a majority of roofs in neighborhood being replaced, except state farm customers. We've had 2 roofers indicate replacement needed. But two state farm inspections say it's "fine." Now we have leaking vent boots, that one can see light right through. Even state insurance commission is powerless to do anything, unless we hire an independent structural engineer to evaluate. So, effectively consumers simply need to vote with their premiums.

Most people do not take the time to read or even come close to understanding the Insurance Policy which they have just purchased. All coverages are spelled out very clearly in fact. Its funny how we take the time to point out what we do not like, and how we feel, but do not take the time to see what it is that we are really buying. Who's fault is that...

All insurance companies exist to make a profit, but customer service and getting what you pay for should be the driving factor. I've had State Farm for 16 years and you couldn't pay me to switch. I wonder if problems vary by state? I totalled my less than year old car a few years back, and they sent me a check for the current value-and DID NOT raise my rates. I also have my renters insurance with them, and about every other year I get a rebate check based on no claims. I'd say that's a good neighbor!

Sorry you had to go through such an experience with them. I'm surprised the claims dept. didn't use their usual saying "can't cover it because it's an act of God!" They use that one alot

I had an awful time with State Farm too. I switched before we had any accidents. Thank goodness.
