After an errand in the Loop the other day, I dropped in at one of my favorite Starbucks (200 West Adams). Per my usual M.O., as I was waiting for my drink to be mixed I checked out the goodies and ended up with a couple things new to me, including Starbucks Reduced-Fat Blueberry Coffee Cake ($1.95 at this store). Apparently, I was interested but didn't hold out much hope for this venture because when I got home, I shoved it to one side and didn't open the bag again until the next day. "Reduced fat" and "not eaten until the next day" tended to add up to "pretty hard and may have to be dunked" in my book but life is full of surprises. Starbucks Reduced-Fat Blueberry Coffee Cake, even a day old, was delicious and tasted almost as rich as if it had not been made with egg whites and "lite" sour cream. Instead of whole blueberries, this cake is richly rippled with delicious dark blueberry puree which really hit the spot.
STATS:
An average slice (122 grams) contains 320 calories with 50 calories from fat. There are six grams total fat, four and a half grams saturated fat, zero trans fat, ten mg. cholesterol, 420 mg. sodium, 54 grams total carbs, one gram fiber, 33 grams sugars, four grams protein, 2% (D.V.) each Vitamins A and C, and 8% each calcium and iron. As far as Starbucks is concerned ...
YOU COULD DO A LOT WORSE:
A 113 grams piece of Starbucks Classic Coffee Cake is also delicious but packs 420 calories with 160 calories from fat, 95 mg. cholesterol, and 530 mg. sodium. I am second to none in my admiration for this great signature Starbucks classic but with my metabolism I have to pass it up most of the time.
TASTE TIP:
A glass of Simply Orange Juice, a Market Day Mini-Omelet and my piece of Starbucks Reduced-Fat Blueberry Coffee Cake made a perfect Sunday breakfast today.
