It seems as though every day there are dramatic things happening in the arena of public life -- celebrities doing exciting things (or simply doing each other in), dramatic meteorological phenomena or heart-stopping economical developments. Almost every day some health guru is in the news telling us that a certain type of food can hurt us and is therefore no longer worthy of respect. Meanwhile, back at Starbucks, the gang hasn't given up on trying to provide better things to eat. I have already reviewed Starbucks' Perfect Oatmeal served hot in a cup and accompanied by the customer's choice of toppings. Now someone has come up with another better idea to enjoy with your next cup of coffee -- Starbucks Outrageous Oatmeal Cookies.
Each cookie is between three and four inches wide, weighs approximately 89 grams and contains among other things: brown sugar, oats, raisins, vegetable oil, butter, enriched wheat flour and dried cranberries. The cookie is moist and chewy but not to the point of falling apart without prompting. Each cookie costs $1.50 but Starbucks is taking a chance and has provided not only the nutritional information but also the recipe for making a whole batch on their website (Starbucks.com). These are cookies after all packing enough calories and fat to make them something which maybe we shouldn't be eating three times a day but they aren't a bad choice for an occasional treat. The stats reveal that even though these oatmeal cookies are outrageous, they are also worthy of our respect.
STATS:
Each 89-gram cookie is a single serving containing 370 calories with 120 calories from fat. There are 14 grams Total Fat, 8 grams Saturated Fat, zero Trans Fat, 65 mg. Cholesterol, 170 mg. Sodium, 56 Total Carbs and 36 grams Sugars. That's the bad news, here is the good: 3 grams Fiber, 5 grams Protein, 4% (D.V.) Calcium and 10% Iron.
TASTE TIP:
A Starbucks Outrageous Oatmeal Cookie may not be the perfect choice for an idle snack but is great for a mid-morning breakfast, served with your favorite coffee and maybe a bit of fresh fruit or citrus juice. Although it may sound odd, a hard-boiled egg complements this type of cookie beautifully and amps up both the nutritional power and satisfaction for a light meal. Dramatic news events may come and go but oatmeal earned respect long ago for providing hours of satisfaction and staving off cravings for more ulterior foods -- these worthy cookies are no exception to that rule.
