I saw this movie 30 years ago when I was 7 years old. Recently my 8 year and 6 year old wanted to see it. Out of nostalgia I said ok. Some parents might think they were too young, but at the end of the day I think it was OK. We are pretty sensitive to not exposing them to violent video games and not allowing them to have guns. But somehow, this movie seemed worthy of an exception.
So, this review is what my kids like about the movie.
"Ummm, there was light sabers in it. There were guns."
"I liked Luke Skywaker"
Ok, so maybe I have not raised the next Siskel and Ebert. Let me just say that we watched all the movies in the Star Wars series over a few weekends. They loved it and talked about it constantly. They ran around the house with their imaginary light sabers. They talked about with their friends all the time.
Some might think it glorifies violence and is too graphic for a younger audience, but I think it is OK. I may not win parent of the year award, but they loved it and we only watched each once. They have spent time much more time reading and playing because of the ideas and themes inspired by the movie.
Bottom line? - 8 and 6 seemed like the right age to expose our kids to Star Wars.
