St. Marys —

St. Mary's, Georgia:  a quiet, romantic getaway

Just off I-95 is the quaint little town of St. Mary's, Georgia - a perfect spot for a romantic weekend getaway.   Filled with towering oak trees which shade its quiet streets, St. Mary's is one of those ultra-inviting southern coastal towns where not much happens.   It's all about a stroll in the park, a ferry ride, dinner and drinks on the upstairs porch of a downtown eatery. . . just perfect for unwinding.   Take your kayak or bike if you can;  this is a great place to explore by pedal or paddle.

You've likely heard about St. Simon's Island and Jekyll Island, to the north.   Florida's Amelia Island lies to the south.   All combine that cozy moss-filled-oaks vibe with the lure of a tourist island:  lots of shops, restaurants, etc.   St. Mary's is the exception because it has all the beauty of the waterfront setting, and the oak trees, but no beach.   This may be the best reason to visit St. Marys....no beach = fewer people.

Remember Cumberland Island, where JFK Jr. got married in the primitive little church?  It's located on the Atlantic coast, where Florida meets Georgia.   St. Mary's is the gateway to Cumberland Island;  regular ferry service gets you there, and then trolleys take you around.   Get lucky and you might see the island's beautiful wild ponies running. . . (you can also reach Cumberland by ferry from Amelia Island, Florida, in case that helps you picture the geography).

I love St. Mary's.   There are a few little shops and antique stores to poke around in.   Accommodations include one downtown hotel and a couple of B&Bs.   On a breezy night, you can get an outdoor table for dinner, and watch the sun fade over the bay, while golf carts take locals up and down St. Mary's main street . . . on pretty nights, they're out cruising with their little dogs and stopping to chat with people they know.  It couldn't be friendlier or more low-key.  .  .

The Bottom Line:   Libby Loves It!
