The Arch defines St. Louis, it's true. As a local, I have only been up inside the Arch a few times, but it is lovely any time I go. In the base is the Museum of Westward Expansion, a great little museum with many relics from the Lewis and Clark expeditions, including a full-size buffalo that kids love to look at. It really is a good museum for kids. The Arch is often busy, so a good time to go is at night, when not as many tourists are around. Everything is still beautiful, if not more so. I also prefer the Empire State Building and Eiffel Tower at night-- like them, the view is wonderful and the city is so peaceful at night. The Arch is not a good place for those who may be claustrophobic-- the trams going up are very small and the area at the top has small windows and could upset someone who has any type of claustrophic condition. Another tip-- if driving, park across the river in East St. Louis at the Casino Queen, then take the Metrolink across the river to one of the first stops, Laclede's Landing or the Edward Jones Dome. You'll be glad you saved time by not having to circle around to find (and pay) for a parking space in the St. Louis traffic.
