On Memorial Day we traveled to St Augustine with our kids and my sister and brother.. It was so nice to visit a historic place in Florida. There was so much to do and see and it was very educational for the kids.
First we saw the Castillo San Marcos which was built in 1672. It is affordable to get in and there is lots to see. We also went to The old Hotel Alcazar which has shops on the bottom floor where the pool used to be.
We also went to  Old St. Augustine Village is a collection of nine historic houses spanning the period 1790 to 1910. We also did the Ghost Tours which was nice but starting to get in the pricey range we also went to Ripley's but my opinion is if you have been to one or two you have seen them all.
Now for the Beaches we went to St Augustine Beach and Vilanova beach. Both nice but the sand is very "compact" so iut is a little easier to walk on but not to lay on. In Vilanova beach you can pay a few dollars to drive up onto the beach which is nice but I honestly would not recommend it. When we left because it started to rain there were quite a few people stuck.
There is also much more to do if you have the finances.
For the most part St Augustine is great to visit but plan to do a lot of walking. It is a family oriented place or even good for a couple. There is plenty of affordable lodging and food.

I have been to St Augustine before but after reading your review, I want to go back again. There is a lot to see and do and to see it all will take a couple days at least or until your money runs out. Which ever comes first.
