Squidbillies is a cartoon series that airs on The Cartoon Network's late-night "Adult Swim," all about the grotesque misadventures of a hard-drinking backwoods ex-convict squid named Early Cuyler, voiced by the one and only Unknown Hinson. Other characters include Early's illegitimate son Rusty, his aged granny, and his Machiavellian boss, Dan Halen. The program is set in rural Georgia, and if you've spent any time there, you will recognize the general mindset.

It's disturbing and hilarious.

The theme song is pretty kickass, too.

Early is one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time, ranking right up there with Bullwinkle, Daffy Duck, and Deputy Dawg. And that other well-known patriarch, Homer J. Simpson.

Dan Halen (voiced by Todd Hanson, somewhere between Frasier Crane and Charles Foster Kane) is the embodiment of evil, and architect of various tortures inflicted upon the Cuylers. He also has no knees.

The humor is wildly over-the-top, and not for the young'uns, or the easily offended.

Or, for that matter, my wife, who often asks me, "Why are you laughing?" when we're watching this show.

The first season has the funniest and most definitive episodes, as well as featuring the voice of veteran character actor Charles Napier (Supervixens, Rambo) as the Sheriff, who has since been replaced by Bobby F. Ellerbee.

The DVD offers 228 minutes of episodes and bonus material for the Squidbillies connisseur, as well as some truly memorable commentary tracks.

Available from Turner Home Entertainment.

Sounds bizarre enough to be hugely entertaining.
