Did Serena Williams go way too far in the US Open? What should the consequences be?

I have watched Championship Tennis for many years. I watched Ilie Nastase, John McEnroe & Jimmy Connors so I have seen a great many tantrums.

Serena Williams outburst was worse that anything any of them ever did. She was a role model for young women, especially young black women. She & Venus proved that no matter what your environment or financial background was, with dedication & hard work anyone could become a champion.

I don't care whether she wanted to be a role model. All the endorsements she took played heavily on that fact. When she accepted them, she used her popularity to sell things.

She excused it by saying we "saw her passion for tennis". Does that mean if a player doesn't throw tantrums and use profane language,  he/she doesn't have a passion for their game?

I would feel this way no matter what the sex or racial background of the player was. Her apology was half hearted at best & she doesn't seem to feel deep inside that she did anything wrong.

I don't see how she can be barred from playing tennis but I hope she loses every single endorsement she has. If she doesn't, I hope people call or write her sponsors protesting.

I really hope none of this reflects on Venus in people's minds. She doesn't deserve it.

It's a shame. I really used to like Serena.

I too think it is unfortunate that Serena reacted this way. Her behaviour was inexcusable  but.. from the views of her feet that I saw I did not see that it was a foot fault. Plus, who calls a foot fault at a double match point in the last game of a match. So I understand why (though I dont agree with her actions) why she reacted that way.

I also think that her fine $10,500 was a significant statement.

You make a very good case for Serena but she has won a few matches where foot faults were not obvious on her opponent.

I really respect your opinions. You were my first friend here. But I still believe she let down a lot of her fans - especially children who looked up to her. $10,500 is a fortune to me but I don't think it will make much of a sacrifice for her. That's probably pocket change to her.

Still friends?

I don't really care. I played tennis for 4 years in High School and sure I got mad and started cursing lol. I don't think she's wrong, everyone has a moment when they feel like they were in the right and we lose control. Were not perfect.
