Spirit Airlines Review Summary

If you’re simply trying to get from Point A to Point B for cheap, our reviewers rate Spirit Airlines as a good option. But our members forewarn that “you get what you pay for”. While Spirit Airlines is very affordable and easy to book online, there are drawbacks. Spirit Airlines maintains their low price by keeping the fares low but charging for services. Service charges are applied to “pretty much everything” like baggage checking, drinks, coffee, tea, snacks, etc. But, if you are a last minute traveler or traveling with a group and looking to save some money, Spirit may offer the perfect airline option . Compare Spirit Airlines to what others say are the best airlines and worst airlines.

Just last week, while my daughter had her spring break, we decided to fly up to NY to visit my eldest daughter and my 9 month-old grand-daughter.  Well that's not quite right, we decided about a month ago. — Everyone warned us the fares would be savage, and on most other airlines that… read full review »

There's been a wave of airline cutbacks in service over the past few years, and customer satisfaction levels for all U.S. flag carriers are at historically low levels. Customer-hostile business practices introduced by cut-rate airlines like Spirit are part of the reason. Seeing passenger-hostile practices percolate to other airlines is the rest of the reason. — — Sprit is a sleazy company that civilized humans try to stay far away from. They introduced the idiotic practice of charging for EVEN ONE checked bag --- a practice that previously better airlines are now trying out. … read full review »

Spirit Air's pricing is reasonable, but their customer service is incredibly bad!  — I first suspected doing business with them was going to be an ordeal when I tried to find their phone number on their website.  It's not proudly and prominently displayed (my interpretation is that they're not real keen on hearing from you).  I finally found their number tucked obscurely away in their FAQ section. — When you find it, and you phone them, expect to get a busy signal 80% of the time.  On the one in five chance you do get thru to their voicemail… read full review »

SPIRIT Airlines is the classic dilemma: the fares are comparatively inexpensive (even after the hidden charges) but you give up a significant amount of service that makes travel comfortable. —  First, customer service is non-existent.  Waiting times for phone reservations are long, flight attendants are often rude, and even the CEO has contempt for his customers. — Second, the company is attempting to make the airline experience a la carte.  In other words, instead of paying one price for all services, you pay for things along the way.  A few bucks to… read full review »

If you're looking to get somewhere with absolutely no amenities and/or baggage, this airline is your best bet. If you travel frequently, don't bother. This airline brags about its cheap fares, but don't tell you in advance (unless you actually go in and read all of their fine print beforehand) that you will be charged for pretty much everything a la carte. I was shocked when I didn't see a change machine for the lavatories. You're allowed one carry-one (+plus a handbag if you're female) otherwise it's $5(on the web)/$10 (at the airport) to check your first 2 bags in and $100 for each… read full review »

Impossible to get through to customer service on phone. On hold for over 1 hour before hanging up. No reply yet via online customer help. Bags are supposed to be $5 for first bag prior to June 10, 2008--unable to prepurchase online for the $5 rate. On top of that, the $10 prepurchase does not work either! I have no doubt I am in for a huge hasell at the airport. I HATE to be nickled and dimed for everything. And the price of $160 for FLL-ISP is not even that cheap. I chose this airline becuase it is a nonstop flight, but absolutley will not fly them again. —… read full review »

I just joined the $9 mile club, so I can't comment on that yet, but I just recently flew Spirit and was surprised at the extras that were charged!  First to check bags at the curb it was $2 per bag plus gratuity -  Then it cost $10 per bag for all check ins.  ($5.00 if paid on line before hand).  Then once I was aboard I found out no more compliment drinks including coffee, water and soft drinks.  I was contstantly opening my  wallet for all the… read full review »

I'll keep this short. Today is saturday. On monday I took the first round trip flight to Florida from Boston. Didn't arrive on time, no big deal. I left Friday morning, flight left late and again arrived late. — — I go to retieve my luggage, it never shows up, there are no Spirit Representatives around, I and several other passangers wait at the AirPort for an HOUR AND THIRTY MINUTES, before we finally find a rep, who happens to be strolling by sipping on a straw of her cup of soda. Great, they seem to only have one spirit employee at the entire AirPort and she was on an at least… read full review »

I think Spirit will have to pay me to use them again.  We flew non-stop from Detroit to Las Vegas.  First they would not let me book seats online because we used "Spirit Vacations".  So?  But they said you could only do advance seating when using Spirit Air, not Spirit Vacations.  That ticked me off since I even paid $1 more by booking hotel and air together.  But I figured it was easier, than paying booking and pay two separate bills. — As a result, we were in the very last row.  This plane is probably the smallest plane I've been on.  Everyone… read full review »

I've flown Spirit several times.  Each time is a different experience.  The price is always great.  More times than not, their fare beats all others leaving from Detroit Metro airport.  They are a good choice if you're not set on specific travel dates and times.  While they gave lower fares, the flight choice is more limited than other airlines.  Booking is easy online.  Nothing confusing about the web site.  They do charge for checked baggage now. You can do that prepaid or at the airport, prepaid is cheaper.  I prepaid when I booked. Even… read full review »

I have tried calling due to one incorrect number (of a 9 number sries) entered on their website and received a busy signal on the 800# for 3 whole days, when I finally got through, I was on hold for over an hour, and the number they gave me to call and correct this, was, you guessed it, busy. —  I was charged on my credit card by them, for a charge I never placed.  Though my credit card, was reimbursed, I never received a response when I told CS of this problem, though I was told someone would contact me within 48 hours. — Last, but not least, I filled out… read full review »

I have flown with Spirit Airlines on numerous occasions.  I have found great deals on flights online.  I once flew from Detroit to NYC for under $100 round-trip.  I did notice that there were some cut-backs in service and some additional costs associated with the trip.  I had to pay for each bag I checked.  I found out later that I could've paid online in advance and gotten a cheaper price per bag.  It was $10 per bag.  Also, on the flight, passengers had to pay for any drinks (soda/pop, alchol, juice--anything).  Luckily it was a short… read full review »

I flew to Detroit, MI from Myrtle Beach for $36.00 round trip!  This was part of their $9.00 — fare club deal. Booking on line was super easy. I was able to get direct flights both going — to Detroit and leaving Detroit. Although one flight was at 9:00 P.M. and the other one was — at 7:00 A.M., which was not at all inconvenient to me as I traveled alone. Both flights landed — on time, which is a rareity now a days! The flights were pleasant, attendants friendly, and — the plane was clean. Metro Detoit Airport can get really crazy, but Spirit's area is quiet… read full review »
