My oldest son, who is 6 now, has loved to draw from an early age. One of the best toys I've ever bought his was an Aquadoodle. He's had an one since he was about 3. It provides him a place to create, without the mess.
The Spinmaster Aquadoodle my son has is a large floor mat with a red border. It's about 2' x 2', which is plenty enough room to draw and comes with a water pen. Our Aquadoodle has the alphabet and numbers down two of the sides. On the other two sides are step by step instructions on how to draw things like a dog or a boat, simple things. On the inside of the mat, the surface isn't smooth or shiny, it's rough and dull like a canvas. There is even an elastic loop on the side of the mat to store you pen and the mat can be folded up for travel.
To use just fill your pen with water and draw away! Simple as that. When your pen touches the mat it will color it blue. Any time water touches the mat it will show up. I really like that the picture stays for a little while, it doesn't dry and disappear too quickly. Sometimes I even let my 17 month old play with this toy too even though recommend age is 24+ months. Instead of letting him use the pen I wet his fingers and let him finger paint. He loves it. Any child that comes to my house and plays with the Aquadoodle loves it.
This toy will be in my house until my kids out grow it. The Spinmaster Aquadoodle is one of the best toys out there for younger children. I highly recommend this one!
